What is media editing?

Media editing involves selecting, modifying, and arranging audio, video, or digital content to create a polished final product. Media editors use specialized software to cut, enhance, and combine raw footage, sound, or images according to project requirements. Their work is essential in industries like film, television, advertising, and online content creation, ensuring that the end result is engaging and aligns with the intended message or story. Media editors also collaborate with producers, directors, and other creative professionals throughout the editing process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a media editor?

To thrive as a Media Editor, you need a strong grasp of storytelling, visual composition, and content organization, often supported by a degree in media, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or Avid Media Composer is essential, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing feedback and collaborating with production teams. These skills and qualities are vital to producing polished, engaging media content that meets project goals and audience expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by media editors when working with tight deadlines?

Media editors often work under tight deadlines, especially in fast-paced industries like news, advertising, or digital content creation. One common challenge is balancing speed with quality, as editors must ensure that all content meets brand standards and technical requirements despite time constraints. Additionally, last-minute changes from clients or producers can require quick turnarounds and strong organizational skills. Collaborating effectively with writers, producers, and other team members is essential to streamline the process and deliver high-quality results on schedule.

About Johnston & Murphy Since 1850, Johnston & Murphy has been a symbol of American craftsmanship and timeless style. What began as a heritage footwear brand has evolved into a lifestyle label offering apparel, shoes, and accessories designed for the modern professional. We take pride in our legacy—and in our forward-thinking approach to creativity, innovation, and connection.

We’re looking for a Social Media Content Creator who can bring the J&M story to life across platforms—someone who not only creates great content but also helps build programs that turn our community and partners into brand advocates.

The Ideal Candidate

The Social Media Content Creator will develop and execute content strategies that elevate the J&M brand, drive engagement, and expand earned media impact. This role is both creative and strategic—responsible for creating compelling visual content, identifying partnership opportunities, and fostering organic brand love through community and influencer relationships.

Areas of Influence
  • Marketing Collaboration: Work closely with the marketing team to align on brand voice, campaign objectives, and performance insights that inform creative strategy.
  • Content Creation: Concept, produce, and publish high-quality photo, video, and written content optimized for each platform (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn).
  • Trendspotting & Innovation: Monitor culture, fashion, and platform trends to keep J&M ahead of the curve with relevant, shareable, and earned-media-worthy content.
  • On-Set & Field Production: Plan, style, and shoot engaging content in studio, retail, and lifestyle settings, maintaining visual consistency with brand standards.
  • Community Engagement: Activate real-time storytelling during launches, events, and collaborations to encourage reposts, shares, and other engagement.
  • Performance Analysis: Track performance metrics, engagement rates, and earned media value (EMV) to measure impact and refine future content and outreach strategies.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Own the end-to-end creation of social-first content — from concepting and capturing to editing and delivery.
  • Create both iPhone and camera-based content, including quick-turn videos, polished stills, and behind the scenes content.
  • Edit short-form video with a strong sense of timing, pacing, audio, and platform-specific style (TikTok, Reels, Shorts etc.)
  • Attend brand shoot days to capture BTS, product details, movement-focused footage, and supplemental campaign content
  • Translate creative briefs and campaign ideas into engaging, high-performing social video concepts.
  • Stay tapped into short-form video trends, editing techniques, trending audio, and creator culture.Contribute fresh, trend-aware ideas in brainstorms and help shape the content calendar with original concepts.
  • Support CRM and paid media teams by producing versatile visual assets adapted from organic content.
  • Ensure all content aligns with the brand's visual identity and is optimized for performance across platforms.
  • Apply light color correction and basic retouching to maintain quality and consistency across all deliverables.
  • Maintain organized content libraries for consistent brand output and quick asset retrieval
Experience and Skills You'll Need to Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 2–4 years of experience in social media content creation, influencer engagement, or brand storytelling—ideally within lifestyle, fashion, or retail industries.
  • Proven ability to create visually compelling content that drives engagement and earned media amplification.
  • Deep understanding of current social media trends, creator ecosystems, and community-building best practices.
  • Strong photo/video production and editing skills (Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, Lightroom, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
  • Passion for fashion, design, and creative storytelling.
How to Apply

Please submit your résumé, portfolio, and 2–3 examples of social media or influencer content that demonstrate your ability to drive engagement and earned media results.

Why You’ll Love Working Here
  • Be part of an iconic American brand that’s redefining modern style.
  • Work with a creative, passionate team shaping the next era of J&M.
  • Hybrid schedule with flexibility and collaboration built in.
  • Competitive compensation, full benefits, and employee discounts.
