What is media content moderation?

Media content moderation is the process of reviewing, monitoring, and managing user-generated content on digital platforms to ensure it complies with community guidelines and legal standards. Moderators assess text, images, videos, and other media for inappropriate, offensive, or harmful material. This helps protect users, maintain brand reputation, and create a safe online environment. Content moderators may work for social media companies, online forums, or other platforms where users can post content.

What are some common challenges faced by media content moderators, and how can they be managed?

Media content moderators often encounter emotionally challenging or disturbing material while reviewing user-generated content, which can take a toll on their mental well-being. To manage these challenges, companies typically provide regular training, access to support resources such as counseling, and enforce structured breaks during shifts. It's important for moderators to utilize these resources and communicate openly with their supervisors about their workload. Building strong connections with colleagues can also offer additional support and foster a collaborative team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a media content moderator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Media Content Moderator, you need strong attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and a good understanding of community guidelines or legal standards, often supported by a relevant educational background. Familiarity with content management systems, moderation tools, and sometimes AI-assisted filtering platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, emotional resilience, and sound judgment are vital soft skills for handling sensitive or distressing material objectively. These abilities ensure that platforms maintain a safe, respectful environment while upholding legal and ethical standards.

Job description

Gupta Media was founded over 25 years ago on the idea that advertising could create huge leverage in our clients' businesses. Our work initially focused on the entertainment industry, specifically live events and recorded music (SXSW, Sony Music, Universal Music, and Disney Music Group are all clients). We have grown to include global brands (Amazon, Sophia Learning), major sports franchises (X Games, Florida Panthers, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Cavaliers, Women’s Tennis Association), as well as public sector institutions (City of Boston, Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism).

Gupta Media is looking for a Social Media & Content Specialist to help amplify our clients' brands. In this role, you'll lead the planning, creation, and publishing of social content across platforms—from short-form video and photos to copywriting and content calendars. Working closely with our senior team, you'll help execute organic social campaigns, coordinate with influencers and creators, and measure performance to continuously improve results.

Our ideal candidate loves creating content for social media and has a strong eye for what captures attention on screen. While your primary focus will be bringing fresh content ideas to life, you have a foundational understanding of organic social strategy and performance analytics—and you're excited to continue building those skills. You're a collaborative team player who enjoys working alongside our Media and Creative teams, experimenting with new ideas, and continuously learning and growing.

What You’ll Do:

  • Plan, create, and publish engaging social content—including short-form video, photography, graphics, and post copy—for clients. You'll also help develop editorial calendars and content strategies under the guidance of the Senior Social Media Strategist;
  • Analyze and visualize data for content performance reporting to provide actionable insights;
  • Partner with the Senior Social Media Strategist and Media teams to execute influencer content and branded partnerships;
  • Monitor industry and social media trends, tools, platforms, innovations, and best practices;
  • Manage community engagement and moderation on clients’ channels, including proactive outreach and strategic crisis monitoring.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience in an agency or marketing role with a dedicated social media focus
  • Experience working with social media scheduling and content management tools
  • Strong portfolio of successful campaigns and evergreen social content, demonstrating creative storytelling ability across multiple social platforms that build awareness, engage new and existing customers, and increase conversions
  • Proficient with content creation tools like CapCut, Canva, Adobe Premiere, or similar video editing and design software
  • Excellent communication and creative thinking skills, with the ability to use data to inform strategic decisions
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Driven to learn new things and constantly improve on current methods
  • Proactive and independent with the ability to work across various media, meet tight deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adjust as circumstances change
