A Mechatronics Robotics Apprentice is a trainee role that involves learning how to design, build, maintain, and troubleshoot robotic and automated systems. This position combines mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering principles to develop technical skills in robotics and automation. Apprentices typically work under experienced technicians or engineers, gaining hands-on experience with machinery, programming, and system diagnostics. The role is essential in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and logistics, where automation plays a crucial role. Through structured training and practical experience, apprentices prepare for a career in mechatronics and robotics engineering.
As a Mechatronics Robotics Apprentice, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as assembling, testing, and maintaining robotic systems, assisting with automation upgrades, and troubleshooting mechanical or electrical issues. You’ll often work under the supervision of experienced engineers or technicians, participating in team meetings and learning to interpret technical drawings and schematics. Some days may involve bench work or laboratory testing, while others require working on the production floor with automated machinery. This diverse experience provides a strong foundation for advancing to higher-level technical or engineering roles in the future.
To thrive as a Mechatronics Robotics Apprentice, you need a solid background in mechanical and electrical engineering principles, basic programming, and hands-on troubleshooting skills, often gained through vocational training or relevant coursework. Familiarity with PLCs, CAD software, industrial robotics platforms, and safety certifications like OSHA are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and a willingness to learn new technologies help apprentices excel in collaborative and evolving environments. These skills ensure apprentices can safely and effectively support complex automation tasks while adapting to industry advancements.

Mid to Senior Level | Chicago, IL | On-site | Phase3D
About the RolePhase3D develops sensor hardware that gives manufacturers real-time visibility into their additive manufacturing processes. Our systems are deployed at leading manufacturers and research institutions. We are seeking a Hardware Systems Engineer to take ownership of hardware products from concept through validated production release.
This is a hands-on, cross-functional position. You will work across electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing disciplines to deliver reliable industrial products, holding full technical ownership of the products you develop.
We evaluate candidates on their demonstrated ability to design, build, and troubleshoot hardware rather than on academic background alone. Our team includes engineers from electrical, mechanical, and mechatronics backgrounds, united by strong technical range and disciplined problem-solving.
About Phase3DPhase3D empowers the additive manufacturing industry (industrial 3D printing) with trusted inspection technologies that deliver objective, layer-by-layer insights into every build. Its core products, Fringe Research and Fringe Qualification, generate precise heightmaps for each layer, helping customers reduce lead times, increase machine utilization, and improve build quality. Using structured light, a proven inspection method, Phase3D’s solutions measure every layer of the 3D printing process, identify anomalies, and support engineers and technicians in process and product optimization.
Phase3D is a small team accomplishing big things in additive manufacturing, including integration of best-in-class metrology systems into the 3D printing supply chain. We work with tier 1 manufacturers, national laboratories, and federal manufacturing depots.
ResponsibilitiesYou have designed and shipped hardware products and can point to systems you have developed, debugged, and delivered to customers.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every qualification listed. Many of our strongest engineers built their expertise by taking on unfamiliar challenges.
