What is mechanical product design?

Mechanical product design is the process of conceptualizing, developing, and refining physical products or components that involve mechanical systems. This field integrates engineering principles, creativity, and practical knowledge to create products that are functional, reliable, and manufacturable. Mechanical product designers use tools like CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, conduct simulations, and work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure that the final product meets requirements for performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical product designer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Product Designer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, 3D modeling, and materials science, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD) and familiarity with simulation tools or rapid prototyping processes are crucial. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong teamwork skills set outstanding designers apart. These skills ensure innovative, manufacturable products that meet user needs and industry standards.

How does a mechanical product design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Product Design engineers frequently work alongside electrical engineers, industrial designers, manufacturing specialists, and project managers to bring products from concept to reality. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss design constraints, prototype feedback, and integration of mechanical components with other systems. Effective communication and an understanding of each team's requirements are essential to ensure the final product meets all performance, cost, and manufacturability goals. This collaborative environment helps engineers broaden their technical knowledge and develop strong project management and interpersonal skills.

What is the difference between Mechanical Product Design vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Product DesignMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusCreating detailed product concepts and specifications for manufacturingDeveloping and analyzing mechanical systems and components for various applications
Work EnvironmentProduct development teams, manufacturing settingsEngineering firms, R&D departments
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, CAD skillsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, CAD proficiency, possibly certifications

Mechanical Product Design focuses on developing specific products from concept to manufacturing, emphasizing detailed design and usability. Mechanical Design Engineers work on broader mechanical systems, analyzing and optimizing mechanical components. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate in product development processes, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and application.

Job description

Position Summary
We're looking for a Mechanical/Product Development Engineer who enjoys turning ideas into real products. In this role, you'll take ownership of new product designs from concept through production, developing 3D CAD models, creating detailed drawings, building and testing prototypes, and working closely with manufacturing to bring designs to life.
You'll work on a diverse range of commercial and defense products, giving you the opportunity to solve different engineering challenges rather than focusing on the same product or process every day.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys designing, building, testing, improving, and ultimately seeing their work become a finished product.
What You'll Do
  • Develop new mechanical products and components from initial concept through production
  • Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings
  • Evaluate and improve existing products through redesign and engineering analysis
  • Develop prototypes and support product testing, qualification, and validation
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to new and existing designs
  • Identify critical-to-function features and develop practical solutions for quality, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Work directly with manufacturing, machinists, technicians, and other engineers to bring designs into production
  • Support material, component, tooling, and manufacturing process selection
  • Create and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Apply GD&T and sound engineering principles to ensure designs meet functional and manufacturing requirements
  • Participate in product development reviews and help move projects from concept to production

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field
  • Minimum of a 3.3 GPA for all completed degrees
  • Professional experience with mechanical/product design and development
  • Experience using 3D CAD software to create models and engineering drawings
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
  • Experience taking products or components from design into production
  • U.S. Citizenship required due to ITAR requirements

Preferred:
  • 3+ years of mechanical/product development engineering experience
  • Experience with GD&T / ASME Y14.5
  • Experience with CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, casting, tube fabrication, or other manufacturing processes
  • Experience with product development or stage-gate processes
  • Experience with prototyping and product testing
  • Experience processing Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)

Why This Role?
  • Work on both commercial and defense products
  • Take ownership of projects from concept through production
  • See your designs become real, production-ready products
  • Work alongside experienced engineers, machinists, technicians, and manufacturing professionals
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of design and manufacturing technologies
  • Solve new engineering challenges across a diverse product portfolio
