What are some common challenges a mechanical integration engineer faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What is the difference between Mechanical Integration Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Integration EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating mechanical components into systems, ensuring compatibility and functionalityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies from concepts
Skills & CertificationsCAD, system integration, testing, often requires engineering degreeCAD, design software, prototyping, often requires engineering degree
Work EnvironmentSystems integration labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-disciplinary teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, robotics, where system integration is keyProduct development, consumer electronics, machinery design

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Job description

Mechanical Engineer – Product Validation / PLM

Location: Bolingbrook, IL – Hybrid Opportunity

Hire Type: Contract-to-Hire

Pay: $27–$34/hour, depending on experience

New Graduates Encouraged to Apply

No C2C or 3rd party candidates will be considered.

Sterling Engineering is seeking two Mechanical Engineers / Product Validation Analysts to support a manufacturing systems and product data initiative. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys problem-solving, troubleshooting, product data, and manufacturing systems.

This position is less focused on traditional mechanical design and more focused on validating engineering data, troubleshooting BOM and system issues, and ensuring accurate product information between PLM and ERP systems. Candidates ranging from new graduates to experienced professionals will be considered.

What You'll Do

  • Validate engineering and manufacturing Bills of Materials (EBOM/MBOM)
  • Review part structures, revisions, metadata, and release status
  • Compare product information between Windchill and ERP systems
  • Identify and resolve BOM mismatches, missing components, and revision issues
  • Troubleshoot product-data and system-integration errors
  • Monitor transactions between PLM and ERP systems
  • Investigate failed transactions and support reprocessing
  • Perform data validation, auditing, and cleansing
  • Troubleshoot user-reported data and system issues
  • Support PLM/ERP implementation and go-live stabilization activities
  • Track issues, backlog, success/failure rates, and resolution performance
  • Document recurring problems and recommend process improvements
  • Work with Engineering, Manufacturing, IT, PLM, and ERP teams to resolve issues

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • New graduates will be considered
  • Understanding of BOMs, engineering drawings, revisions, and product structures
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Comfortable reviewing and working with large amounts of technical data
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Understanding of manufacturing and product lifecycle processes
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability

Experience with any of the following is a plus: PTC Windchill, PLM/PDM systems, JD Edwards, Oracle Integration Cloud, Creo, EBOM/MBOM structures, master data management, ERP/PLM implementations, data migration, or hypercare/go-live support.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build experience at the intersection of engineering, manufacturing, product data, PLM, and ERP systems.

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
