How much do mechanical engineering teaching jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineering teaching in Florida is $76,880.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60,900.00 and $94,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is mechanical engineering teaching?

Mechanical engineering teaching involves instructing students in the principles, concepts, and applications of mechanical engineering. This role can include teaching courses on subjects such as thermodynamics, mechanics, materials science, and computer-aided design. Mechanical engineering teachers may work at high schools, colleges, or universities, and often combine lecturing with hands-on lab work and project supervision. They also help students develop problem-solving and analytical skills necessary for engineering careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineering teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Teacher, you need in-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and often teaching credentials or certification. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, simulation tools, and learning management systems is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to inspire and mentor students are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure effective teaching, practical skill development, and student engagement in a technical learning environment.

What are common challenges faced by mechanical engineering teaching professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Mechanical engineering teaching professionals often encounter the challenge of engaging students with varying levels of background knowledge and practical experience. Staying current with rapidly evolving industry technologies and integrating them into the curriculum can also be demanding. Effective strategies include incorporating hands-on projects, fostering collaborative learning environments, and regularly updating course materials to reflect modern practices. Building strong connections with industry partners can further enhance learning by providing real-world context and internship opportunities.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineering Teaching vs Mechanical Engineering Design?

AspectMechanical Engineering TeachingMechanical Engineering Design
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, teaching certification (if applicable)Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, professional engineering license (optional)
Work EnvironmentEducational institutions, classrooms, labsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, R&D labs
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, colleges, technical schoolsManufacturers, engineering firms, product development
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding teaching roles in mechanical engineeringUnderstanding design and development roles in mechanical engineering

Mechanical Engineering Teaching involves educating students in academic settings, focusing on theory and fundamentals. Mechanical Engineering Design centers on creating and developing mechanical systems and products. While both require a background in mechanical engineering, teaching emphasizes instruction and curriculum development, whereas design emphasizes innovation and technical problem-solving.

Job description

Mechanical Engineering - AI Data TrainerAbout The Role

We partner with the world's leading AI research teams and labs to build and train cutting-edge AI models. Now we're looking for mechanical engineers to help us make those models smarter, more rigorous, and technically trustworthy.

Your deep expertise in fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, and related disciplines will be used to challenge, stress-test, and refine how advanced AI systems reason through real engineering problems. This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical knowledge in a completely new domain - and directly influence the next generation of AI.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10-40 hours/week
What You'll Do
  • Design Complex Engineering Problems - Craft advanced, multi-step problems across domains like FEA (Finite Element Analysis), heat transfer, kinematics, thermodynamics, and material science to rigorously test AI performance.
  • Author Ground-Truth Solutions - Write detailed, step-by-step technical solutions and benchmark responses that AI models use as the gold standard for learning.
  • Audit Technical Reasoning - Evaluate AI-generated outputs - including CAD logic, thermodynamic proofs, and material specifications - for accuracy, safety, and adherence to engineering standards (e.g., ASME, ISO).
  • Refine AI Reasoning - Identify logical errors such as incorrect force distributions, energy conservation violations, or flawed assumptions, and provide structured feedback to improve how the model thinks.
Who You Are
  • Advanced Degree - Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Domain Expertise - Strong foundational knowledge in one or more core areas: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, CAD/CAM, or manufacturing processes.
  • Clear Technical Communicator - Able to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical reasoning in clear, structured written form.
  • Detail-Oriented - High precision when checking derivations, unit conversions, boundary conditions, and physical constraints.
  • No AI experience required - if you know engineering, we can teach you the rest.
Nice to Have
  • Prior experience with data annotation, data quality, or evaluation workflows
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, or ANSYS
  • Familiarity with how large language models (LLMs) are trained or evaluated
Why Join Us
  • Work on genuinely cutting-edge AI projects alongside top research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible - work on your schedule, your terms
  • Meaningful work: your expertise directly shapes how AI understands engineering
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of real, impactful projects
  • Exposure to advanced LLMs and the forefront of AI development
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
