Job description

SUMMARY: The Product Development Engineer I role is an entry level role, responsible for assisting in product design, product improvement, development, and support. This position requires a solid understanding of mechanics, strength of materials, knowledge in a variety of manufacturing processes, and the ability to troubleshoot, analyze, determine root cause, and correct product issues with the support of engineering staff. This position will also be a key contributor in new product development and successful product launches through hands on development, design, experiments, testing and validation. Product development may be mechanical or electrical in nature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Problem Resolution - Troubleshoot, analyze and determine root cause and successful corrective action to issues that arrive related to product design and/or process.

· Hands on approach to prototyping, testing, and basic fabrication related to engineering projects, test equipment and processes.

· Support new product design efforts through contributions in design, analysis, FMEA support and implementation of best practices.

· Support new product design efforts through design of experiments, testing, testing analysis and validation. Develop and execute tests to evaluate product quality, durability and acceptability to various industry standards and internal test standards.

· Perform all necessary evaluations and calculations such as stress analysis, performance analysis, product quality, durability and acceptability to various industry and company standards.

· Coordinate transition to manufacturing and product launch through management of production ready deliverables such as BOM’s, work instructions, etc.

· Interact with vendors concerning parts they supply or propose to supply to company.

· Advise supervisor of work status, workload, problems and progress as related to work assignments.

· Understanding of electrical schematics, physical routing and packaging and system compatibilities.

COMPETENCIES/ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Solid understanding of mechanics, strength of materials, knowledge in a variety of manufacturing processes and the ability to design and prototype product.

· Basic experience required to facilitate the most effective and cost-effective designs, as well as develop and analyze test metrics and validation.

· Ability to manage workload within several projects, including prioritization, time management and coordination with various departments in order to meet project goals and deadlines.

· Computer skills in data analysis, spreadsheet usage, 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

· Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.

· Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal formats.

· Demonstrated capability to develop strong interpersonal working relationships and work in a team environment.

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE):

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology degree or equivalent; 1-4 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

This job operates in a professional office environment, plant floor, and shop locations. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. This job will also entail the use of hand and power tools as well as test and measuring equipment.
