Being comfortable working in cross-functional teams can significantly enhance your success and contribute to innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

What type of jobs do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems such as engines, HVAC systems, manufacturing equipment, and robotics. They often work in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing, utilizing skills in CAD software, thermodynamics, and materials science. Their roles may involve research, project management, and ensuring safety and efficiency standards are met.

Job description

The Mechanical Engineer is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) who specifies, designs, and seals mechanical drawings for government facilities, including secure and sensitive facilities, and designs mechanical, thermal, and integration systems for mobile platforms, in support of MAG Aerospace's U.S. Government defense programs.

The role carries the design from requirements and specification through sealed, construction-ready drawings and construction support. Reporting to program leadership, it applies across a portfolio of programs rather than any single effort.

The position designs facility mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, environmental control, and mechanical infrastructure, and platform mechanical systems, including enclosures, equipment mounting, thermal management, and vehicle integration; produces and seals the facility drawings; and supports the design through construction and integration.

The role is open at the mid-career and senior levels and requires an active PE license and the ability to seal drawings.

***Must Be US Citizen***

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the licensed mechanical engineer of record: specify, design, and seal mechanical drawings for government facilities, including secure and sensitive facilities.
  • Design facility HVAC and environmental-control systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, cooling, and humidity control, with load calculations, equipment sizing, and ductwork and piping design, to ASHRAE standards, the applicable mechanical code, and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
  • Design ventilation, filtration, exhaust, pressurization, and equipment-cooling systems for mission-critical and secure facilities.
  • Design mechanical systems for secure and sensitive facilities, including the acoustic isolation, pressurization, and mechanical penetration treatments such facilities require, in coordination with security engineering.
  • Design fire protection and suppression and plumbing systems for facilities, to applicable NFPA and plumbing codes.
  • Design platform mechanical and integration systems: modular enclosures and mission bays, equipment mounting and structural load paths, thermal management, and integration into ground vehicles, all within size, weight, and power constraints, in support of the platform team.
  • Produce, review, and configuration-control the mechanical drawing set, and support the design through construction, installation, inspection, and authority-having-jurisdiction review.

REQUIRED / MINIMUM SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Facility mechanical design, including HVAC, environmental control, ventilation, cooling-load calculations, ductwork and piping, and equipment sizing, to ASHRAE standards and the applicable mechanical code.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and sealing stamped mechanical drawings for construction, and interfacing with the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Department of Defense project experience and familiarity with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
  • Secure and sensitive facility mechanical design, including acoustic, pressurization, and penetration-treatment measures.
  • Experience with fire protection, plumbing, and equipment-cooling systems for mission-critical facilities.
  • Mechanical design experience for platforms or vehicles, including enclosures, equipment mounting, structural load paths, and thermal management (MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-1472 as applicable).
  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD and drawing production (SolidWorks, Revit, AutoCAD, or equivalent) and engineering drawing to ASME Y14.5.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Prior U.S. military service, or direct experience supporting U.S. military operations.
  • An active or current Top Secret/SCI (TS/SCI) clearance.
  • ICD 705 and secure-facility accreditation experience.
  • PE licensure in multiple states, or an NCEES record for expedited comity licensure.
  • Experience with thermal analysis, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), or mechanical commissioning.
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in mechanical engineering, with the ability to seal drawings.

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. Master's degree preferred.

MINIMUM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Mid level: a minimum of 5 years of mechanical engineering design experience. Senior level: 10 or more years, including lead design responsibility for facility and mission-critical mechanical systems.

Department of Defense, secure-facility, ICD 705, HVAC, and platform or vehicle integration experience is strongly desired.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND CLEARANCE

Must hold, or be able to obtain and maintain, a U.S. Department of Defense Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information access (TS/SCI). U.S. citizenship is required.

This position involves access to technical data controlled under U.S. export control regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

TRAVEL

Up to 25 percent, to integration, demonstration, site-survey, and customer sites in CONUS and OCONUS.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in office, bench-integration laboratory, and high-bay vehicle-integration environments.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work in and around vehicles, and use hand and power tools.

The position is contingent upon candidate’s ability to meet physical and medical requirements as needed by the position; including compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local jurisdictional requirements.
