What Do Mechanical Engineers Do?

Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest genres in the engineering industry. Specific job duties vary, depending on the kind of company and assigned project. In general, Mechanical Engineers spend their time researching, designing, developing, building, testing, and inspecting mechanical devices. These devices may include engines, tools, thermal sensors, and large machinery apparatus. On a daily basis, a Mechanical Engineer may spend time analyzing mechanical and thermal devices, troubleshooting problems, determining solutions, and completing repairs. They also develop and test technical and mechanical prototypes of new designs and devices. A Mechanical Engineer can also work on devices such as escalators, elevators, conveyor systems, and automated transfer stations.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

What does a Mechanical Engineer do?

A Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, builds, and tests mechanical devices such as engines, machines, and tools. They use principles of physics and mathematics to solve engineering problems and improve existing products. Mechanical Engineers can work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Their responsibilities often include creating blueprints, analyzing data, and collaborating with other engineers or professionals to ensure projects meet safety and quality standards.

We're hiring an Applications Engineer to develop pump system solutions for industrial and municipal customers. This role is responsible for translating customer requirements into technically sound, commercially viable equipment selections and system proposals - and then helping carry those jobs forward through submittals, order and specifications review, and execution.

This is an engineering-heavy role for someone who understands pumps deeply, can think through an application from the hydraulic and mechanical side, and can stay involved after award to make sure the solution that was sold is the solution that gets delivered.

About Tencarva

Tencarva Machinery is a distributor, engineering and design partner, and OEM-authorized repair network within the process equipment/flow control market. With 38 locations across 17 states, Tencarva provides end-to-end, whole-system solutions for over 18,000 active customers across many verticals, including industrial, municipal water/wastewater, power generation, oil/gas, mining/aggregates, and automotive. Our service offerings include system analysis and design, applications engineering, custom fabrication of equipment packages, automation & controls, equipment remanufacturing, and thermal hard coatings. tencarva.com

The Role

You will evaluate customer requirements and overall system performance, select pumps and supporting equipment, and prepare technically accurate quotations, bills of material, and proposal packages. Just as important, you will stay involved after the job is awarded - reviewing scope, supporting submittals, helping resolve technical questions, coordinating with vendors and internal teams, and making sure the equipment package remains aligned with the application and specifications.

This role requires strong pump knowledge, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work comfortably between sales, customers, vendors, and internal execution teams. You will be expected to develop and apply deep expertise within specific product lines and applications, serving as a technical resource for both sales engineers and internal teams.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Review customer requirements, specifications, drawings, and application data
  • Perform pump sizing, selection, and system configuration for industrial and municipal applications
  • Select supporting equipment and accessories based on application requirements
  • Prepare quotations, bills of material, and technical proposal packages
  • Develop schematics, layouts, and supporting documentation as needed
  • Review contract scope and specifications for compliance, documentation, calculations, and testing requirements
  • Support submittal development and technical review after award
  • Stay engaged after award to help ensure the equipment package, submittals, and final deliverables remain aligned with the application and specifications
  • Work with vendors, purchasing, production, service, and sales to keep projects aligned and moving
  • Maintain accurate records of quotes, opportunities, projects, and correspondence
  • Maintain and continue developing deep knowledge of product lines, software tools, and pump applications

Why Join Tencarva

  • Annual Incentive Program
  • Profit Sharing via 401(k)
  • Opportunity to work on complex industrial and municipal pump applications
  • Broad exposure to engineered systems, pump packages, and a variety of product lines
  • Collaborative environment with experienced Sales Engineers and technical teams
  • Stable, established, growing organization with a strong reputation for technical expertise and long-term customer relationships
  • Opportunity to build depth as a recognized application expert within key product lines
