BWXT is currently seeking a NDE Development Engineer for its Lynchburg Technology Campus (LTC) in Virginia!
The Non-Destructive Evaluation and Inspection Systems (NDE&IS) group at BWXT researches, develops, and builds custom non-destructive inspection systems for both internal and external customers. These non-destructive evaluation (NDE) systems are mostly based on ultrasonic testing but can involve electromagnetic (i.e. eddy current) testing or vision systems.
Having a history of developing electromagnetic NDE devices, we are currently also involved in developing induction heating systems. The NDE&IS group is comprised of 12 staff members that provide physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and build up capabilities. NDE&IS maintains extensive capabilities for modeling ultrasonic wave propagation, ultrasonic inspections, and eddy current inspections. NDE&IS also has enterprise level finite element modeling (FEM) capability for electromagnetics, thermal, and stress analysis. To further support the buildup of these systems NDE&IS has full electrical, electronics, and printed circuit board development capabilities that includes simulating analog circuitry, digital circuitry, and working with the smallest components available.
NDE&IS is seeking an experienced Non-Destructive Evaluation Development Engineer to join our group of engineers and technicians to support the research and development of these systems. Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Assess candidate non-destructive evaluation needs and develop design concepts for custom system development to meet those needs.
  • Work with potential customers to prepare and submit cost proposals for the development of custom systems.
  • Design and model ultrasonic inspection tests and testing systems.
  • Design other NDE tests supported by analysis and numerical modeling to optimize and verify the design.
  • Perform NDE system design including specifying subsystem components such as scanners, NDE instruments, data acquisition instruments, and software development.
  • Conduct system verification testing of an inspection method or system. Design and implement modifications to the inspection or testing system as needed to obtain the correct results.
  • Design electromagnetic devices such as eddy current coils, magnetic devices, and induction heating coils.
  • Design and develop custom analog and digital circuits for use in these systems.

Job qualifications/Requirements:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Physics or Engineering with courses in electromagnetics, analog/digital electronics design, wave propagation, thermodynamics, and mathematics.
  • At least (4) years of related experience with emphasis on ultrasonic testing is required.
  • Candidates with experience using CIVA for simulating ultrasonic and eddy current inspections is a plus.
  • Candidates able to use electronic CAD packages and electronics simulation software is a plus.
  • Candidates with experience using ANSYS FEM packages to simulate electromagnetic and thermal device operation is a plus. Experience with combined physics modeling such as electromagnetic and thermal is a plus.
  • Having some proficiency in programming in LabVIEW, C++, C#, C, or similar programming languages is a plus.
  • The candidate should be a self-starter, capable of working as part of a team, and occasionally independently.
  • The candidate should have good oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

Pay: $ 81,000.00 - $ 123,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $81,000.00 and $123,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
