What does a mechanical engineer intern do?

A Mechanical Engineer Intern assists professional engineers with the design, development, and testing of mechanical devices and systems. Their responsibilities often include creating CAD drawings, conducting research, performing calculations, and helping with prototyping or laboratory testing. Interns gain hands-on experience by supporting real engineering projects and working alongside experienced engineers. This position provides valuable exposure to engineering processes and workplace culture, making it a key step for students studying mechanical engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a mechanical engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you'll typically assist with tasks such as CAD modeling, design analysis, prototype testing, and documentation of mechanical systems. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, contributing to ongoing projects in product development or process improvement. While responsibilities can vary by company, you may also be involved in hands-on work in labs or workshops, attending team meetings, and learning to use industry-standard engineering tools. This exposure offers a valuable opportunity to develop both technical and teamwork skills in a real-world engineering environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you need a strong grasp of engineering principles, mathematics, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by progress toward a mechanical engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and basic manufacturing processes is often required. Strong teamwork, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and absorb feedback in a professional environment. These abilities are crucial for contributing meaningfully to engineering projects and developing technical expertise for future roles.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Intern vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineer InternMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of Mechanical Engineering programBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in engineering departments or labsFull-time engineering office or design studio
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by manufacturing, automotive, aerospace companiesDesign-focused roles in similar industries

The main difference between a Mechanical Engineer Intern and a Mechanical Design Engineer is experience and responsibility level. Interns are typically students gaining practical experience, while Mechanical Design Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems.

Which internship is best for mechanical engineer interns?

The best internship for mechanical engineer interns typically involves companies or organizations that offer hands-on experience in design, manufacturing, or research, and often require knowledge of CAD software, MATLAB, or similar tools. Job description

Job Description Join a growing engineering team at the heart of the energy sector, working on technically challenging projects that directly impact drilling performance and safety. This is a chance to apply your mechanical expertise in a hands-on environment, collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals to develop and support advanced drilling fluid systems and related equipment. About the Role: You will be responsible for the mechanical engineering design, analysis, and support of equipment and systems associated with drilling fluids operations.

Working closely with chemical, mechanical, and petroleum engineers, you will ensure equipment meets performance, safety, and regulatory requirements. Your work will contribute to reliable field operations and continuous improvement of products and processes. Key Responsibilities: Design, analyze, and validate mechanical components and systems used in drilling fluids applications.

Develop engineering calculations, models, and drawings in compliance with ASME, API, and ASTM standards. Support equipment selection, specification, and configuration for drilling fluids systems. Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting of mechanical issues in field and lab environments.

Prepare clear, detailed technical reports, design documentation, and engineering justifications. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (operations, R&D, manufacturing, and field personnel) to implement design improvements. Review vendor documentation and ensure mechanical integrity and compliance with applicable standards.

Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives. Key Requirements: Proven experience as a Mechanical Engineer in the energy, oil & gas, or related heavy industrial sector. Practical exposure to drilling fluids systems, equipment, or closely related drilling operations.

Strong working knowledge of ASME, API, and ASTM standards as applied to mechanical design and equipment. Proficiency with mechanical design tools and software (e.g., CAD and basic analysis tools). Demonstrated ability to write structured, concise technical reports and engineering documentation

Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects. Desirable Skills: Experience working alongside chemical or petroleum engineers on drilling or production projects.

Background in the design or operation of pumps, mixing systems, tanks, and pressure-containing equipment. Familiarity with field operations, commissioning, or maintenance of drilling-related equipment. Understanding of reliability engineering, FEA, or advanced mechanical analysis techniques.

Experience in a project-based environment with exposure to cost, schedule, and risk considerations. Qualifications: BS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline (required). Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas or progress toward licensure (preferred).

Additional training or certification related to oil & gas, drilling operations, or pressure equipment design (preferred). If you are a mechanically focused engineer looking to deepen your impact in drilling fluids and energy projects, apply now to explore this long-term opportunity.
