What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior mechanical engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and advanced certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries like aerospace, automotive, or energy. Such roles often require leadership responsibilities, advanced degrees, and proficiency with CAD software and engineering analysis tools.

What is mechanical design?

Mechanical design is the process of creating and developing components, systems, or machines to perform specific functions efficiently, reliably, and safely. It involves using engineering principles to select materials, define dimensions, and specify manufacturing methods. Mechanical designers use tools like CAD software to create detailed drawings and prototypes, ensuring their designs meet technical, economic, and safety requirements. The field spans a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and consumer products.

What jobs can you get with a mechanical design degree?

A mechanical design degree prepares individuals for roles such as mechanical engineer, product designer, CAD technician, or design engineer. These jobs involve creating, analyzing, and improving mechanical systems and components using tools like CAD software and often require knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering principles.

How does a Mechanical Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during the product development process?

Mechanical Design Engineers frequently work alongside teams such as electrical engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure that designs are feasible, manufacturable, and meet all functional requirements. Regular cross-functional meetings, design reviews, and iterative feedback sessions are common parts of the workflow. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as changes in one aspect of the design can impact other disciplines, making collaborative problem-solving a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and familiarity with simulation software and industry standards (such as ASME or ISO) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication help engineers collaborate and innovate in multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure reliable, efficient, and safe mechanical solutions that meet project specifications and industry requirements.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior mechanical engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership roles can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large corporations. Achieving this level often requires advanced degrees, certifications, and a track record of significant project management or innovation.

What do you do as a mechanical designer?

A mechanical designer creates detailed plans and specifications for mechanical systems and components using CAD software. They analyze design requirements, develop prototypes, and collaborate with engineers and manufacturers to ensure functionality and manufacturability of products.

The Mechanical Project Engineer - Healthcare leads project-level mechanical design and coordination for hospitals, ambulatory care, behavioral health/recovery centers, and medical office facilities across the Midwest. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, this role focuses on design execution, technical coordination, and mentoring junior staff under the guidance of mechanical managers and senior technical leads.
Posting Locations for this role: Lisle, Normal, Peoria, or Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO
What You'll Do
  • Act as project mechanical engineer on healthcare and institutional projects, managing day-to-day mechanical design delivery and coordination.
  • Design HVAC and mechanical systems (air distribution, hydronic systems, central plant connections, pressurization, and related medical gas interfaces), including load calculations, equipment sizing, layouts, narratives, drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs in BIM (Revit) with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and technology disciplines to produce fully coordinated construction documents.
  • Perform field surveys and site investigations to document existing conditions and inform renovation or expansion work.
  • Support energy and system comparison studies and life-cycle cost evaluations in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Assist with construction administration, including review of submittals and RFIs and participation in site observations and punch lists.
  • Apply and help enforce applicable codes and standards (IMC, IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, ASHRAE 170, NFPA 99, FGI Guidelines) for projects in Illinois, Missouri, and neighboring jurisdictions.
  • Provide guidance and QA redlines to designers and junior engineers; support project managers and mechanical managers with scope, level-of-effort, and schedule input.

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; EIT required, PE or ability to obtain preferred.
  • Typically, 8-12+ years of experience in building mechanical design, including significant work on healthcare or complex institutional facilities in an AEC/MEP consulting environment.
  • Experience serving as project-level mechanical engineer responsible for design production and multi-disciplinary coordination.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare mechanical requirements (ventilation/pressurization, infection control, redundancy/resiliency) and applicable codes/standards.
  • Proficiency in HVAC design tools and Revit/BIM; Navisworks or similar coordination tools a plus.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organization skills.
