What does a mechanical design engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed blueprints and models, ensuring that products meet required specifications and standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with other engineers and teams to bring a concept from idea to production. Mechanical Design Engineers are found in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and relevant certifications (like FE or PE) is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and present design solutions. These abilities are crucial for developing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet both technical requirements and client needs.

What are some typical challenges mechanical design engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that mechanical designs align with the requirements and constraints of other disciplines, such as electronics placement or thermal management. Effective communication and regular meetings are crucial to resolve conflicts, address design changes, and keep projects on schedule. Building strong cross-functional relationships helps Mechanical Design Engineers anticipate potential issues early and deliver integrated solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectMechanical Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredAssociate degree or technical diploma in drafting or CAD technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDrafting departments, engineering firms, manufacturing settings
ResponsibilitiesDesigns, analyzes, and develops mechanical systems and componentsCreates detailed technical drawings and plans based on engineers' designs

The main difference is that Mechanical Design Engineers focus on designing and developing mechanical systems, requiring engineering degrees and licenses, while Mechanical Drafters prepare detailed drawings based on engineers' concepts, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles work closely in the engineering process but serve different functions within the product development cycle.

What is the work of a Mechanical Design Engineer?

A Mechanical Design Engineer develops and creates mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD software and engineering principles. They analyze specifications, perform simulations, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are functional, efficient, and manufacturable.

We are laying the foundation for a better future for our customers, employees, and communities by revitalizing America's manufacturing base and creating meaningful jobs across the country, including in historically deindustrialized regions.
We operate an advanced, end-to-end manufacturing platform that partners with industrial companies and innovators to take products from first concept to full-scale production in critical verticals including aerospace and defense, electrification, medical, energy and environment, and robotics and automation.
The way we operate is as important as the work we do. It's guided by The Re:Build Way, 16 principles that shape how we collaborate with each other, partner with our customers and vendors, and contribute to the communities where we operate. (link to The Re:Build Way principles)
About Re:Build Applied Logix
Re:Build AppliedLogix provides product OEMs with leading-edge embedded systems design services and product commercialization expertise. Our senior team of electronics, software, and mechanical engineers are fluent in a broad range of applications including fuel cell control and battery management systems, precision agriculture, medical devices, automotive and transportation components, and imaging systems with machine vision and AI processing integration.
The Re:Build AppliedLogix Team provides design expertise for all facets of modern digital product development - with custom analog and digital embedded electronics; VHDL and Verilog targeting FPGAs, embedded software on bare-metal, RTOS or Linux; full-stack application development (Linux and Windows). Our mechanical design capabilities include the packaging of embedded systems, tooling design, and manufacturing process development.
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a talented entry level Wire Harness Design Engineer with knowledge of wire harness design principles to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in our design services business, collaborating closely with clients to understand their requirements and developing comprehensive wire harness design packages ready for manufacturing.
This is an on-site opportunity based at the Re:Build AppliedLogix development center in Rochester, NY.
What you get to do!

  • Review and finalize any missing design inputs, ensuring all specifications are accurately captured.
  • Utilize industry-leading Cadonix Arcadia software tools to create detailed wire harness designs and documentation.
  • Design mechanical routing and retention of harnesses using solidworks.
  • Ensure that every design complies with the relevant industry standards and client specifications.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to provide necessary support during the production phase.
  • Conduct design reviews and incorporate feedback to optimize designs for functional performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Manage the Cadonix Arcadia part database, including part creation and quality control of part data.
  • Manage team access and user permissions within the Cadonix Arcadia software.
  • Maintain thorough documentation throughout the design process.
  • Work in a team environment to develop and refine internal processes to improve design quality.

What you will bring to the team
  • BS degree in Electrical or electro mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in wire harness design.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical).
  • Strong understanding of electrical first-principles, wire routing, and wire harness assembly techniques.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., UL, IPC, SAE) related to the Automotive industry.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients and internal teams.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering high-quality designs on schedule.
