What Is a Mechanical Design Engineer?

A mechanical design engineer is a professional who designs mechanical products or systems. Mechanical design engineers often work in every aspect of product development: conducting research, designing, prototyping, and testing. Mechanical design engineers use their knowledge of science, technology, design, and mathematics to meet the product requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and relevant certifications (like FE or PE) is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and present design solutions. These abilities are crucial for developing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet both technical requirements and client needs.

What are some typical challenges Mechanical Design Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that mechanical designs align with the requirements and constraints of other disciplines, such as electronics placement or thermal management. Effective communication and regular meetings are crucial to resolve conflicts, address design changes, and keep projects on schedule. Building strong cross-functional relationships helps Mechanical Design Engineers anticipate potential issues early and deliver integrated solutions.

What does a Mechanical Design Engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed blueprints and models, ensuring that products meet required specifications and standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with other engineers and teams to bring a concept from idea to production. Mechanical Design Engineers are found in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.

Can I make 200k as a mechanical engineer?

Achieving a $200,000 salary as a mechanical design engineer is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, working in high-paying industries such as aerospace or automotive, or holding senior or managerial positions. Salaries vary based on location, education, certifications, and the complexity of projects handled.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDrafting departments, engineering firms, manufacturing settings
ResponsibilitiesDesigns, analyzes, and develops mechanical systems and componentsCreates detailed technical drawings and plans based on engineers' designs

The main difference is that Mechanical Design Engineers focus on designing and developing mechanical systems, requiring engineering degrees and licenses, while Mechanical Drafters prepare detailed drawings based on engineers' concepts, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles work closely in the engineering process but serve different functions within the product development cycle.

Job description

About Torticity

Founded six years ago and based in Boca Raton, Florida, Torticity is a B2B2C lit-tech company that does case workup for plaintiff law firms - helping them advocate for claimants seeking justice across mass tort, personal injury, sexual assault, and natural disaster cases.

Our proprietary tech boosts efficiency and sets new industry standards. We're an AI-native team investing heavily in what comes next. Today, we offer comprehensive, end-to-end solutions that help law firms navigate complex pre-litigation/litigation effortlessly.

We blend innovation with justice, turn challenges into opportunities, and build the future of legal excellence every day. Join us and be part of something extraordinary!

📍Remote opportunities available nationwide. Employees within a 40-mile radius of our Boca Raton HQ enjoy in-person collaboration and enhanced compensation. Hybrid work model: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in-office.

The Role

We're hiring a Design Engineer to work directly with our Product Design lead. You'll have real ownership from day one and a clear growth path.

We're a small team. Design, engineering, and product work as peers in our trio model - discovering together, collaborating on solutions, and sharing ownership of outcomes. Solutions aren't handed down from above; you and your trio own the "why" and the "how." We ship fast, debate openly, and care about getting things right.

You're Excited About This Opportunity Because You Will…

  • Leverage AI to build in code as comfortably as in design software (intersection of design and code)
  • Design and ship product features across our internal CRM platform and our broader product suite, from discovery to live experience
  • Build production-quality components and interactions in our codebase
  • Prototype quickly to validate ideas
  • Establish and evangelize UX playbooks the team can lean on: patterns, conventions, and decisions that scale beyond a single feature
  • Bridge design and engineering - translate design intent into technical conversation, and pull engineering tradeoffs back into design

We’re Excited About You Because You Have...

  • 2-5+ years of experience building polished products
  • You're equally comfortable in design software and your code editor
  • You can build and ship functional PRs that accurately capture design intent
  • You don't need to be a career software engineer, but you should be confident working in production codebases and collaborating closely with engineers
  • You're a daily user of Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent - with strong opinions on how to get high-quality output
  • You can speak engineer and are comfortable around code reviews and technical decisions
  • You have strong visual taste and product intuition
  • You think in systems - you build reusable patterns, not one-off screens
  • You empathize with users and think in whole workflows - you put yourself in someone's shoes and see how a feature fits into their whole day
  • You're curious about design, AI, and the broader industry. You follow people doing interesting work and have opinions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in legal tech or complex B2B
  • Public artifacts of your AI workflow - blog posts, prompt libraries, side projects, CLAUDE.md, Claude Code skills, or .cursorrules files
  • Familiarity with newer design tools (paper.design, Pencil, Claude Design, etc.)

Why You’ll Love Working at Torticity…

  • We are a group of bright, kind professionals who are motivated by challenges and value integrity, innovation, and trust
  • We cultivate a diverse and inclusive community, where all voices are heard and valued
  • We leverage our strengths in legal technology to drive innovation and disrupt the industry
  • We win as a team, commit to our work, and celebrate success together
  • We boldly create the future while keeping equity and client impact at the center of all that we do

Compensation and Benefits

💰 Salary Range: $110,000 - $150,000 USD

  • Medical, dental, vision, and health insurance coverage
  • Life insurance and short/long-term disability insurance
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Comprehensive support for every unique path to parenthood
  • 401k plan
  • Complimentary Calm subscription to support mental well-being
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Holiday Pay, including 11 paid holidays
  • Flexible PTO and Discretionary Time Off for balance and personal needs
