As of Sep 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for mechanical design engineer intern in California is $21.60, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.79 and $23.94 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a mechanical design engineer intern?

A Mechanical Design Engineer Intern assists in designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical components and systems. They work with computer-aided design (CAD) software to create models and technical drawings, collaborate with engineering teams, and support prototyping and manufacturing processes. Interns may also conduct research, review specifications, and refine designs to improve efficiency and performance. This role provides hands-on experience in product development and engineering principles.

What does a mechanical design engineer intern do?

As a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern, you will likely assist in creating and modifying CAD models, preparing technical drawings, and supporting prototype development. You may also conduct design analyses, participate in product testing, and collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot and improve existing designs. Interns often interact with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing and quality assurance, to help ensure design feasibility and performance. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering problems and builds the foundational skills needed for a full-time career in mechanical design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer intern?

A Mechanical Design Engineer Intern should possess a solid grasp of engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) skills, and progress toward a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with 3D modeling software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and understanding of rapid prototyping and simulation tools, are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns succeed in dynamic project environments. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to design projects, communicate ideas clearly, and support efficient product development.

Mechanical Design Engineer

Droyd Robotics

San Francisco, CA • On-site

$115K - $200K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 17 days ago

Job description

About the Team
Droyd builds autonomous robotic systems that automate repetitive manual work in real environments. We design and manufacture our hardware in-house, which means iteration, fabrication, and execution all happen under one roof.
Our robots operate in production settings, which means mechanical design has to be robust, manufacturable, and tightly integrated with electronics and control systems. Our mechanical team designs the structures, linkages, and assemblies that make the robots real - this work moves fast and lives on the shop floor as much as it does in CAD.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Droyd, you will own mechanical subsystems from first sketch through working prototype. You will design, build, break, and iterate on real hardware.
This is a hands-on role. You will spend time in CAD, but also at the printer, in the shop, and on the robot, working closely with electrical, software, and robotics teams to bring systems together.
This role is based on-site in San Francisco, CA.
In This Role, You'll
Design & Engineering
  • Own mechanical subsystem design from concept to prototype and iteration
  • Design parts and assemblies in CAD, supported by hand calculations and FEA when needed
  • Make decisions on materials, tolerances, and manufacturing methods
  • Design for rapid prototyping methods including 3D printing and CNC machining

Prototyping & Build
  • Build prototypes yourself using 3D printers, shop tools, and CNC equipment
  • Work closely with manufacturing to turn designs into physical hardware quickly

Integration
  • Integrate mechanical designs with motors, sensors, electronics, and actuators
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and robotics teams to bring systems together

Work Environment & Schedule
  • On-site in San Francisco, CA
  • Full-time

Compensation: $115K-$200K base salary, plus equity
We're Looking For Candidates Who
  • Have a strong portfolio showing complete systems taken from concept to physical prototype
  • Have experience on hands-on engineering teams such as Formula SAE, aerospace clubs, or robotics teams
  • Have internship or early-career experience on real hardware projects or at hardware startups
  • Are proficient with modern CAD tools
  • Understand manufacturing methods, tolerancing, and assembly workflows
  • Are comfortable with hands-on fabrication and rapid iteration

Nice to have:
  • Experience with FEA, topology optimization, or generative design
  • Exposure to electronics, controls, or mechatronic systems
  • Interest in industrial or visual design alongside functional engineering

About Droyd
Droyd builds autonomous robotic systems that operate in real production environments. We design the hardware, develop the control stack, and generate the data that enables generalist robotics.
If we do this right, robots stop being demos and start being infrastructure.
Join us and help build the systems that make it real.
