What does a mechanical design analysis engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to model and test designs under various conditions. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, reviewing technical drawings, and optimizing designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, they may be involved in prototype testing and troubleshooting to resolve any design issues before manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design analysis engineer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design and analysis methodologies, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and relevant industry codes or certifications (like PE licensure) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical findings. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient products and effective resolution of design challenges.

How does a mechanical design analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Mechanical Design Analysis Engineers often work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development process. They provide critical analysis and simulation data to help refine designs, ensure manufacturability, and verify that products meet safety and performance standards. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, allowing for real-time feedback and iterative improvements. This collaborative environment ensures that the final product is optimized from both a design and engineering perspective.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Analysis EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing mechanical systems for performance, stress, and durabilityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsFEM, CAD, analytical tools, engineering degreesCAD, design software, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign validation labs, simulation software, R&D teamsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, prototyping labs

Job description

The group you’ll be a part of

You’ll be joining the WETS Product Group, a highly collaborative, cross‑disciplinary organization within Lam’s Global Products Group (GPG), focused on delivering industry‑leading wet processing solutions for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The WETS organization develops liquid‑based process equipment supporting both wafer and panel‑level applications, with strong emphasis on new product introduction (NPI), technology differentiation, and manufacturing scalability. Our teams work closely across mechanical, electrical, controls, software, systems, and process engineering—partnering globally to bring complex, high‑performance tools from concept through production while meeting aggressive cost, schedule, and quality targets.

The impact you’ll make

As a Mechanical Engineer4 in the WETS Product Group, you will contribute directly to the design, development, and delivery of next‑generation wet processing equipment for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Your work will support critical NPI programs, shaping mechanical designs that meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability goals. In this role, you will translate system‑level and subsystem requirements into robust mechanical solutions, working closely with Systems, Process, Electrical, Controls, and Manufacturing Engineering partners. Your contributions will help reduce development risk, accelerate schedules, and enable high‑quality products to reach customers on time. This is an execution‑focused role with meaningful ownership, where strong fundamentals and good engineering judgment make a visible impact on product success.

What you’ll do
  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems for complex semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Translate system‑ and subsystem‑level requirements into detailed mechanical designs, layouts, and drawings.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation in accordance with Lam standards.
  • Perform engineering analysis (e.g., tolerance analysis, thermal‑mechanical considerations, structural integrity) to support design decisions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Systems, Process, Electrical, Controls, Software, and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure successful subsystem integration.
  • Support NPI phase‑gate activities (Pre‑DR, DDR, CDR, FDR) by delivering assigned mechanical design milestones on schedule.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and failure analysis, contributing to DFMEA and corrective action efforts.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Supply Chain partners to ensure designs are manufacturable, serviceable, and cost‑effective.
  • Support prototype build, system integration, debug, and validation activities.
  • Contribute to sustaining engineering efforts and field issue resolution as needed.
  • Provide key deliverables including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), technical specifications, risk analysis, test specifications, and design review presentations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers.
Who we’re looking forMinimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with8+years of experience; or Master’s degree with6+years’ experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and technical presentation skills.
  • Highly proficient in3DCAD tools such as CREO, Siemens NX, ProE, SolidWorks, and others.
  • Hands‑on experimental and design background coupled with solid engineering skills.
  • Solid foundation in mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience creating detailed mechanical designs using3DCAD tools (e.g., Creo, NX).
  • Ability to read and interpret system requirements, drawings, and interface documentation.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work productively in a collaborative, fast‑paced, NPI environment.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with semiconductor manufacturing equipment or other complex electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with wet processing, fluid handling, thermal management, or chemical‑compatible mechanical design.
  • Exposure to NPI development processes, phase‑gate reviews, or prototype builds.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing ramp or working with global suppliers.
  • Knowledge of DFx principles (reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, safety).
  • Interest in technical growth toward senior engineering roles.
