Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer information

What does a mechanical design analysis engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to model and test designs under various conditions. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, reviewing technical drawings, and optimizing designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, they may be involved in prototype testing and troubleshooting to resolve any design issues before manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design analysis engineer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design and analysis methodologies, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and relevant industry codes or certifications (like PE licensure) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical findings. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient products and effective resolution of design challenges.

How does a mechanical design analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Mechanical Design Analysis Engineers often work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development process. They provide critical analysis and simulation data to help refine designs, ensure manufacturability, and verify that products meet safety and performance standards. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, allowing for real-time feedback and iterative improvements. This collaborative environment ensures that the final product is optimized from both a design and engineering perspective.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Analysis EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing mechanical systems for performance, stress, and durabilityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsFEM, CAD, analytical tools, engineering degreesCAD, design software, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign validation labs, simulation software, R&D teamsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, R&DProduct development, manufacturing, engineering firms

Both roles require engineering degrees and CAD skills, but the Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer specializes in evaluating and testing mechanical systems through analysis, while the Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing new mechanical designs.

Our smart cutting machines, design apps, and materials make creativity easy and accessible for everyone. We believe everyone is born creative, and our mission is to put the power of handmade into the hands of all. With a passionate community of Makers around the world, Cricut helps turn inspiration into real, tangible creations-one project at a time.
Let's make.
Job Description
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on our product development team, you will assume a key leadership role on the team, providing deep mechanical engineering expertise honed over a career of critical judgement and decision-making. You will develop mechanical designs for new and existing products by applying engineering and fabrication principles to product designs for the consumer market in accordance with business needs and the product road map. You will lead and mentor other engineers in the company and individuals both senior and junior to you and at the same level as you. You exhibit a strong capability to exercise judgement, communication with a wide variety of team members internally to the company and externally, and the ability to both see the future of our product development as well as design for the current state, all with excellence.
Essential Duties
  • Develop concepts and ideas for new products or methods to improve existing products.
  • Design mechanisms, drive systems, sheet metal, plastic housinvbgs and components in support of new products
  • Develop cost estimates based on product concepts or designs
  • Use engineering principles to develop the structural design of products by incorporating mechanical and electrical subsystems to meet industrial design, marketing, and customer requirements to meet project schedules.
  • Specify materials and components in designs
  • Manage multiple design projects at once. Work independently with little or no direction. Keep management informed and apprised of design. Work with other functional groups (marketing, sales, customer service, etc.) within the company to develop and evaluate designs that meet customer needs.
  • Present and participate in design reviews and update designs as required.
  • Develop schedules for part and product development.
  • Proactively identify risks and develop and execute risk reduction measures
  • Problem solve- identify root cause, verify the root cause through on/off testing and implement both corrective and preventative actions to resolve problems
  • Keep appraised of the customer experience related to company products.
  • Work with design and/or manufacturing partners to ensure manufacturability and smooth product ramps leading up to production.
  • Perform testing of designs to prove functionality and reliability.
  • Generate design specifications and drawings for external design and manufacturing activities.
  • Apply statistical methods such as process capability studies and DOE's in the development and improvement of products.
  • Mentor other engineers through out the design cycle

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ Years of applicable experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities
  • Experience designing consumer based products similar to ours such as crafting machines, inkjet printers or similar electro-mechanical devices, medical devices or similar.
  • Proficient in the use of 3D CAD (CREO preferred but also acceptable are SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and engineering analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB).
  • Interest in and an aptitude for robotics, kinematics, dynamics, mechatronics, mechanism design, etc.
