Job description

The Mechanical Automation Engineering 3 position is part of the Production Engineering group that supports all areas of production and assembly in the factory. This includes sheet metal stamping, copper tubing, aluminum tubing, heat exchange coils, paint, plastics, material kitting, and assembly. The ideal candidate will have the necessary skills and have relevant experience with problem solving, collaboration, strong design skills and hands on mechanical aptitude. The Mechanical Automation Engineer 3is responsible for conceptualizing, specifying, designing, ordering, and programming automation equipment with a focus on robotics. Also provides guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, technicians, and operations support staff. Capable of managing project plans, executing capital projects, and activities requiring multi-functional teams.

Position Responsibilities May Include:

  • Develop equipment specifications and cost breakdowns for industrial automation equipment.
  • Design automation cell layouts, fixtures, robot tooling, etc. using 3D CAD software.
  • Create detailed CAD drawings for manufacturing.
  • Robot sizing, selection, simulation, and programming.
  • Develop and prototype new concepts for automation.
  • Analyze processes to optimize cycle times.
  • Implement equipment cells into a production environment.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Document equipment/tooling designs with appropriate bills of materials, cost analysis, and drawings.
  • Coordinate project work internally within the department and externally with other departments to ensure on-time completion of projects within budget. 
  • Develop suppliers for manufacturing equipment, create an environment of continuous improvement in equipment up time, efficiency, safety, and quality.
  • Manage own automation project schedule, budget, and identify needed resource.
  • Create preventive maintenance plans that effectively maintain the equipment in optimal form without the need for short cutting quality or machine capability.
  • Create detailed equipment manuals to document new processes and hand off to operations.
  • Assist with training operations and maintenance on new automation equipment.
  • Perform other job duties as required by supervisor/manager.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experienced in 3D CAD design (Experience with SOLIDWORKS preferred)
  • Experience with industrial robots and basic programming (Experience with FANUC preferred)
  • Experience in pneumatic and sensor component selection
  • Basic understanding of electrical diagrams
  • Understanding and knowledge of manufacturing engineering theory, processes, and practice
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills, compliance oriented and attention to detail
  • Effective project management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to deliver the message to any level of the organization with clarity and preciseness required at each level
  • Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills and ability to work with teams

Competency:

Experience:

  • 6 plus years in a production/manufacturing engineer role
  • 3 plus years of 3D CAD design
  • 3 plus years of equipment design: Automation, HVAC equipment, automotive, or appliance industry preferred
  • 1 plus years working with industrial robots preferred

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree – Electronics, Robotics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering required

People Management: No

  • Physical Requirements / Work Environment:
  • Must be able to perform essential responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Manufacturing environment with forklift traffic - various PPE required.
  • May have higher noise volume in areas – hearing protection required.
  • Requires ability to stand for long periods up to 8 to 10 hrs.
  • Repetitive movement, good eye/hand coordination, operation of hand tools, and power tools.
  • Job requires standing, walking, stooping or bending, reaching, twisting and turning.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and/or move up to 50lbs.
