As part of the Sonos team, you'll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives.

JOB TITLE: Acoustical Engineer (Job Code: QD1204)

JOB DETAILS:

Design and engineer transducers from concept to launch and lead new technology development. Will work with cross-functional teams located at multiple sites distributed globally to meet targets for schedule, functionality, cost, and quality. Coordinate development across engineering, product and program management, sourcing and operations. Focus on transducer acoustic design, simulation and material science. Scope, plan, and advise new transducer and component initiatives. Verify the feasibility of the initial transducer design target from system engineers and provide a final transducer design solution. Anticipate acoustic design work and cross functional needs related to the acoustic design without direction. Simulate and design various transducers and associated components autonomously. Develop advanced design and simulation skills. Lead transducer design review from acoustic and mechanical perspectives. Prototype and evaluate transducers design. Generate and implement acoustical test plans on various transducers. Generate and implement transducer reliability test plans. Debug acoustical issues coming out of transducer builds. Communicate internally and externally unsupervised related to transducer development.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Physics plus 3 years of experience in loudspeaker design or acoustics.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess expertise/knowledge sufficient to adequately perform the duties of the job being offered. Expertise/knowledge may be gained through employment experience or education. Such expertise/knowledge cannot be "quantified" by "time". Required expertise/knowledge includes:

  • Product development processes, particularly for integrated electromechanical products which include powered speakers, portable speakers and soundbars.
  • Skilled in acoustical simulation using COMSOL, VituixCAD, LEAP, FineMotor, prototyping, and evaluating electroacoustic transducers and associated components design which includes voice coils, cone, surround, spiders (dampers), and motor assemblies.
  • Skilled in using COMSOL and Ansys for acoustical simulation to create transducer designs and defining the geometry of the speaker in a modeling program (COMSOL) for simulation prior to prototype creations.
  • Experience using a variety of acoustic test equipment, including Klippel and Soundcheck, to analyze frequency response, resonant frequency, nominal impedance, off-axis frequency response and other audio characteristics and ensure product requirements are met.
  • Understanding of simulation model for transducer using CAD software, OnShape or NX to allow fitting into the final product and performance and design assessments for manufacturing.
  • Knowledge in transducer component material properties selection (Young's modulus, yield strength, density, electrical resistivity) and manufacturing processes (injection molding, stamping, forging) to determine how different materials affect performance.
  • Experience with integrating finite element method (FEM) simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics with experimental validation to develop and prototype high sensitivity pressure-acoustic sensors.

OTHER: Salary range: $129,917 per year to $134,000 per year.
