Railserve is hiring an experienced and safety-focused Locomotive Mechanic based out of Decatur, IL to support locomotive maintenance operations throughout the region. This is a full-time, hands-on mechanical role critical to maintaining reliable locomotive equipment and supporting safe, efficient customer operations.

No certifications are required for this role; however, certifications and related experience will be taken into consideration when determining starting pay.

Job Description

The Locomotive Mechanic is responsible for maintaining Railserve's fleet of locomotives to ensure safe, reliable operations throughout the region. This position supports the company's ability to serve customers by performing scheduled maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, and responding to equipment repair needs in the field.

This role works closely with operations teams and customers to maintain locomotive reliability while ensuring compliance with company safety procedures and maintenance standards. Responsibilities include preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, inspections, documentation, and troubleshooting of locomotive systems and components.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety-focused, dependable, and comfortable working independently in outdoor industrial environments. Previous heavy mechanical experience is strongly preferred, and Railserve is willing to train individuals with strong mechanical backgrounds.

Schedule:

  • Schedule may vary based on operational and customer needs
  • Nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required

Compensation:
$26.00 - $30.00 per hour (based on experience)

Duties

  • Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance on company locomotives
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical locomotive issues
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, invoices, shipping documents, and expense reports
  • Communicate maintenance updates and repair statuses with customers and operations teams
  • Safely operate cutting torches and welding equipment
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections on equipment
  • Handle environmental materials and waste disposal according to company procedures
  • Comply with company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment
  • Assist in identifying and correcting safety hazards
  • Operate company-provided service truck throughout the region as needed Support additional maintenance and operational duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate degree or technical training preferred
  • Strong mechanical experience required
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience preferred
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to operate cutting torch and electrical welder
  • Ability to work independently and safely in industrial environments
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle heavy equipment and materials
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be able to maintain accurate maintenance documentation and reports
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check
  • Military experience is a plus
