FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Head Mechanic / Assistant Transportation Supervisor
PURPOSE: Provide maintenance services which contribute to the efficient and productive operation of district vehicles, power equipment and shop facilities. Repairs and overhauls automobiles, buses, trucks and other automotive vehicles.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year Diesel certificate from college or technical schools.

Experience:
  • 3 years' experience in auto and diesel mechanics with vehicle maintenance.
  • Must meet Kansas requirements for operating school buses.
    • CDL with proper endorsements (passenger, school bus and air brakes).
    • Certified in First Aid and defensive driving.
    • Current DOT physical.
    • Driving record that meets district insurance standards.
  • Master school bus technicians or master truck equipment technicians preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, and computing ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Knowledge of the theory, care and operation of diesel, internal combustion engines and mowing equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding.
  • Ability to complete performance responsibilities as directed.
  • Ability to understand and implement district safety policies and requirements including those related to chemical hazards, bloodborne pathogens and hazardous energy sources.
  • Ability to perform a variety of general maintenance functions and to keep maintenance and inventory records.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on district vehicles.
  • Examines vehicles and discusses extent of damage or malfunction.
  • Raises vehicle with hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.
  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear.
  • Overhauls, rebuilds, repairs and replaces parts.
  • Rewires ignition system, lights and instrument panel.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers.
  • Monitor health, safety and security conditions in the building and adjoining grounds and provide for par, correction and/or resolution of any concerns or hazards.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations which may have an adverse effect on the health and safety of the students, staff and/or visitors to the building.
  • Attend training meetings and seminars, as approved, to upgrade as well as maintain job skills and knowledge of regulations and procedures related to transportation operations.
  • Synthesizes complex or diverse information; uses intuition and experience to complement data.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; develops alternative solutions.
  • Responds promptly and appropriately to emergency situations and/or district needs.
  • Develops and implements cost saving measures; conserves organizational resources.
  • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote quality; monitors own work to ensure quality.
  • Completes work in a timely manner.
  • Be well informed of all required health and safety regulations and maintain MSDS notebook for all chemicals and hazardous substances stored in the building.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Manipulate hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment.
  • Reach overhead, the shoulder and horizontally to reach and place materials and equipment in certain areas.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, crouching, turning and twisting.
  • Occasional carrying, pushing, or pulling boxes and engines.
  • Crawling under vehicles.
  • Clarity of vision at varying distances to observe diagnostic instruments, manuals, and other printed information.
