Position: Engineer I – Mechanical Design 

Location: Atlanta, Ga 30339

Job Summary

Southern Company Services is seeking an Engineer I to support mechanical engineering design and construction activities for power generation and industrial facilities. This entry-level engineering position is ideal for candidates with 0–5 years of experience who have hands-on experience with mechanical drawing walkdowns, P&ID markups, and CAD drafting. The selected candidate will assist with engineering design, construction packages, material estimates, and contractor oversight while ensuring compliance with Southern Company engineering standards and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering principles to support the design and construction of power generation and industrial projects.
  • Perform field walkdowns and mark up mechanical drawings and P&IDs to reflect existing conditions and design changes.
  • Develop and revise mechanical P&IDs using CAD software.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, construction packages, specifications, and material estimates.
  • Develop design alternatives and support project planning activities.
  • Review contractor engineering packages and perform quality assurance reviews.
  • Support construction and maintenance teams during project execution.
  • Utilize engineering software and CAD applications to develop technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Southern Company engineering standards, safety requirements, and industry regulations.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, contractors, and vendors to deliver successful projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • 0–5 years of engineering experience in power generation, heavy industrial, or related industries.
  • Experience performing field walkdowns and marking up mechanical drawings and P&IDs.
  • Experience using CAD software to create and modify mechanical P&IDs.
  • Basic understanding of engineering design, construction, and maintenance processes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in power generation, heavy industrial, manufacturing, or utility environments.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or similar CAD platforms.
  • Experience supporting construction, maintenance, or plant engineering projects.
  • EIT (Engineer in Training) certification is a plus.
