Mechanic Design information

What is a mechanic design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

Our talented staff of more than 650+ professionals deliver integrated planning, design, engineering and construction solutions.

Help Shape Projects-and the People Behind Them.

MSG is growing, and we're looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who wants to make an impact-both through the projects they lead and the engineers they help develop. In this role, you'll be a key contributor in designing and delivering mechanical systems for a diverse range of projects, providing the technical expertise and leadership needed to bring ideas from concept to completion. You'll work alongside a talented multidisciplinary team to solve complex challenges, support successful project delivery, and create practical, innovative solutions for our clients.
But this role isn't just about the technical work. We're looking for someone who enjoys sharing their knowledge, mentoring early-career engineers, and helping others grow. You'll serve as a trusted resource for the team, helping shape the next generation of talent while continuing to expand your own leadership skills and advance your career. If you enjoy collaborating with talented professionals, tackling interesting engineering challenges, and making an impact both on projects and within your team, you'll fit right in at MSG.

  • Develop detailed mechanical design packages, including plans, sections, details, P&IDs, and specifications
  • Perform pump and pipe flow calculations, system curve analyses, and equipment sizing for various process applications
  • Design and specify heat trace systems, insulation, and freeze-protection components for facility and outdoor installations
  • Evaluate and select mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, and mechanical supports
  • Participate in design reviews and quality checks to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements
  • Provide technical leadership by planning and delegating project work, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting their professional growth and development

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • 7-12+ years of mechanical design experience in facilities, water/wastewater, pump stations, or industrial process environments
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Strong knowledge of process piping, pump systems, flow calculations, and mechanical system design
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and mechanical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, or similar)
  • Experience designing heat trace systems and freeze-protection components
  • Understanding of relevant codes and standards (ASME, NFPA, IPC, AWWA, etc.)
  • Ability to lead design tasks, coordinate across disciplines, and deliver high-quality construction documents
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to guide junior staff and engage effectively with stakeholders

  • 401(k) w/ company match
  • Health insurance w/ HSA option, Vision, Dental, Life
  • Flexible schedule
