Mechanic Apprentice

The Apprentice Mechanic works alongside, and is mentored by Ketek Journeyman Mechanics, working towards achieving trade certification. This position is responsible for assisting with troubleshooting equipment issues and repair to ensure equipment is performing optimally.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Rebuild and make repairs to diesel/gasoline, pneumatic, and electric powered equipment
  • Inspect, service, maintain, diagnose, troubleshoot, dismantle, and replace unit assemblies or parts
  • Communicate with supervisors and other divisions on methods, procedures, standards, and hazards
  • Exercise judgment in the selection of materials and tools as well as methods so that the job is performed in accordance with accepted manufacturers specifications and safety

  • Trouble-shoot, plan, and perform work requiring a good knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, low voltage direct current, electronic and pneumatic principles, trade techniques, properties of various materials, and operating and application principles of equipment
  • Follow specifications on complex equipment diagrams, parts drawings and catalogues
  • Examine and reason, through cause analysis, for failure or improper operation of engines, pumps, running gear, parts, and equipment
  • Repair and rebuild engines, hydraulic and electric systems of diesel/gasoline, electric, propane and pneumatic powered equipment
  • Repair and rebuild transmissions, traction motors, and differentials
  • Use precision testing equipment to determine source and cause of fault and to perform close tolerance adjustment
  • Test and operate repaired equipment as required
  • Make field repairs as required to bring equipment back on-line
  • Keep tools and equipment in clean and orderly condition
  • Operate hand tools and equipment
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties in the shop
  • Represent Ketek in a light that is commensurate with the values of Management and the Corporate Vision and Mission Statements
  • Observe all safety procedures and use proper Personal Protective Equipment
  • Be considerate of the needs of our community and the environment
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

Required

  • Fluent in the English language (reading, written, spoken)
  • High School diploma
  • Enrolled in a Heavy Equipment Technician program
  • Must demonstrate good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Must be able to read, evaluate, and respond to product specifications and drawings, and perform normal math calculations easily
  • Must be able to follow supervision
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and frequent demanding deadlines
  • Ability to handle changing schedules and priorities, with high level prioritization skills
  • Strong work ethic and organizational planning skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills

Preferred:

  • Forklift experience
  • Fall Protection experience
  • AWP experience
  • Overhead Crane experience

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand/sit, talk/hear, stoop, climb, lift, balance, kneel and use of hands/fingers to operate tools, machinery and materials
  • Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50lbs) may be required
  • Use of mechanical aids: overhead crane, forklift, pallet jack, and dolly may be required
  • Regular exposure to loud noises. Hearing protection is provided when needed
  • Potential exposure to acetylene gas, fumes, oil, and paint residue
  • Exposure to sharp edges and pinch points
  • May be required to work in high, precarious places that are near moving parts and/or electrical works or in confined spaces

Work Environment

  • Yard and shop environment (100%)
  • May be required to work weekends and outside of regular office hours
  • May be required to work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and heat
