What is an MDM engineer?

MDM Engineers, or Mobile Device Management Engineers, are IT professionals responsible for deploying, configuring, and maintaining mobile device management solutions in organizations. They ensure that mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops are securely managed, compliant with company policies, and protected against security threats. MDM Engineers also handle tasks like device enrollment, software updates, troubleshooting, and support for end-users. Their expertise helps organizations maintain control over mobile endpoints while enabling secure access to corporate resources.

What is the difference between Mdm Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectMdm EngineerData Engineer

Work EnvironmentData management teams, enterprise data systemsData pipelines, cloud platforms, big data environments
Employer & Industry UsageFinance, healthcare, retail with focus on master dataTech companies, finance, e-commerce with focus on data pipelines

While both roles involve working with data, an Mdm Engineer primarily focuses on managing and maintaining master data across systems, ensuring data consistency. A Data Engineer builds and maintains data pipelines and infrastructure for analytics. The roles often overlap but differ in their core focus and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges MDM engineers face when managing large-scale mobile device deployments?

MDM Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent policy enforcement across a wide variety of devices and operating systems, troubleshooting connectivity and compliance issues, and keeping up with frequent OS updates that can impact configurations. Managing security while balancing user productivity can also be complex, especially in organizations with BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies. Effective communication with IT support, security teams, and end-users is essential to proactively address potential issues and maintain smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MDM engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MDM (Mobile Device Management) Engineer, you need strong expertise in managing mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Windows), networking fundamentals, and a relevant degree in IT or computer science. Familiarity with MDM platforms like Microsoft Intune, VMware Workspace ONE, or MobileIron, as well as certifications such as CompTIA Mobility+ or Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and clear communication skills help MDM Engineers to effectively support end users and collaborate with IT teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring secure, compliant, and efficient management of mobile devices in an organization.

Job description

A large enterprise technology organization is seeking a Senior Endpoint Vulnerability Remediation Engineer for an engagement based in the Scottsdale, AZ area (hybrid). This role sits within an endpoint-focused team responsible for securing Windows and Mac devices at scale, with heavy emphasis on vulnerability remediation, patching, and endpoint configuration management using tools such as Intune, Jamf, and PowerShell.
This is a high-visibility, high-impact role where the top priority is reducing a significant backlog of endpoint vulnerabilities across the enterprise. The team needs a true senior-level engineer who can step in immediately, analyze why issues persist, and take ownership of driving them to resolution. This is less about following a playbook and more about figuring things out in real time—working across unknown stakeholders, troubleshooting deeply rooted issues, and helping establish better processes. If you’re someone who thrives in fast-moving environments and enjoys solving messy, real-world problems, this role offers the chance to make a measurable difference quickly.
Contract Duration: 12 Months
Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in endpoint management, vulnerability remediation, or security engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with Windows operating systems (primary focus) and working knowledge of MacOS
  • Proficiency with PowerShell scripting and/or Bash for Mac environments
  • Experience with endpoint management platforms such as Intune and/or Jamf
  • Background in patch management tools such as SCCM, MECM, WSUS, or Patch My PC
  • Ability to interpret vulnerability scan data and take action on remediation
  • Strong understanding of file systems, software installations, and endpoint configurations
  • Experience working in MDM environments and troubleshooting patch failures
  • Ability to coordinate with stakeholders and drive remediation efforts forward
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals related to endpoint vulnerabilities
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Experience with vulnerability and EDR tools such as Rapid7 or Defender for Endpoint
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow or similar ticketing systems
  • Experience repackaging applications or working with legacy software vulnerabilities
  • Exposure to MacOS tools such as Nudge or Installomator
  • Knowledge of CIS benchmarks or endpoint hardening practices
  • Experience building reporting dashboards using tools like Splunk or Power BI
  • Security certifications such as Security+, CEH, or CISSP
What You Will Be Doing
Tech Breakdown
  • 90% Windows Endpoint Environment
  • 10% MacOS Environment
Daily Responsibilities
  • 80% Hands-On Troubleshooting and Remediation
  • 5% Oversight and Escalation Handling
  • 15% Collaboration with Teams and Stakeholders
