What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mbse position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE), you need a deep understanding of systems engineering principles, modeling languages like SysML, and a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, IBM Rational Rhapsody, or Enterprise Architect, as well as certification like INCOSE CSEP, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help MBSE professionals translate complex requirements into actionable models and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring robust system architectures, reducing development risks, and streamlining the systems engineering process.

What is an MBSE job?

An MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) job involves using models to support the design, analysis, and development of complex systems. Professionals in this role employ modeling languages like SysML to create digital representations of systems, improving communication and reducing errors. They often work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense, ensuring systems meet requirements efficiently. MBSE engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams and integrate models with engineering tools to streamline the development process.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) on a project team?

As an MBSE professional, your daily responsibilities usually involve developing and maintaining system models that capture requirements, architecture, and interfaces throughout the product lifecycle. You'll collaborate closely with engineers from different domains—such as software, hardware, and testing—to ensure system consistency and traceability. MBSE roles often require participation in technical reviews, documentation of model-based artifacts, and providing support during integration and verification phases. You may also help train other team members in modeling techniques and ensure best practices are followed across projects.

Job description

Barbaricum provides advanced engineering and analytical support to Department of Defense customers across mission engineering, modeling and simulation, and system integration domains. Our teams support Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane in developing, integrating, and evaluating complex DoD platforms and mission systems operating across multiple domains.

We are seeking a Senior MBSE Engineer to support NSWC Crane by developing and maintaining authoritative system and mission models that inform platform architecture, hardware integration, interoperability, and kill-chain execution across operational scenarios, in direct support of test and evaluation activities.

The Role

The Senior MBSE Engineer applies Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies to complex DoD platforms and hardware-centric mission systems composed of sensors, payloads, communications, processing elements, and supporting software. This role supports platform architecture development, System Engineering Technical Reviews (SETR), and digital thread traceability from mission needs through system verification and validation, with emphasis on enabling and assessing end-to-end kill-chain performance, including EMSO-relevant capabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain MBSE products supporting DoD platform architecture definition, mission engineering, and kill-chain analysis in support of SETR activities

  • Create and manage SysML/UML models capturing system requirements, functional behavior, physical architectures, hardware interfaces, and kill-chain functional threads

  • Generate SETR artifacts including platform architecture views, functional threads, interface definitions, kill-chain mappings, and verification mappings

  • Develop and manage MBSE meta-chain reporting templates supporting platform-level digital thread traceability, including kill-chain dependencies and performance drivers

  • Perform data management (DM) and configuration management (CM) of MBSE artifacts across model repositories

  • Integrate MBSE products with hardware-centric modeling, simulation, and analysis environments supporting kill-chain assessment

  • Support platform and mission assessments within Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) and operational test environments

  • Collaborate with hardware, software, integration, and test teams to ensure model fidelity, platform integration readiness, interoperability, and kill-chain coherence

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or STEM discipline from an ABET-accredited institution

  • Active DoD Secret (Top Secret/SCI preferred)
  • 7+ years of systems engineering experience supporting DoD platforms or hardware-intensive systems using MBSE

  • Expert knowledge of MBSE methodologies applied to platform-level and hardware-centric system architectures, including mission and kill-chain analysis

  • Proficiency with MBSE tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, Rational Rhapsody, DOORS, and Teamwork Cloud

  • Strong experience producing platform architecture and SETR artifacts

  • Experience with system-level requirements traceability, verification planning, and mission thread development

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DoD platforms, mission systems, or hardware-centric defense programs with a kill-chain or mission-thread focus

  • Experience modeling physical architectures, hardware interfaces, and system integration boundaries impacting kill-chain performance

  • Familiarity with integrating MBSE products with platform development, integration, and test activities supporting end-to-end mission execution
