What is an MBSE System Engineer?

An MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) System Engineer is a professional who applies modeling techniques to define, analyze, and document complex systems throughout their lifecycle. Instead of relying solely on traditional document-based methods, MBSE System Engineers use digital models to improve system understanding, communication, and integration among stakeholders. Their work enhances traceability, reduces errors, and supports early detection of issues, leading to more efficient and effective system development. MBSE System Engineers often use specialized tools such as SysML to create and manage system models.

What is the difference between Mbse System Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectMbse System EngineerSystems Engineer
CertificationsModel-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) certifications, UML, SysMLGeneral engineering certifications, PMP, Cisco, or industry-specific credentials
Work EnvironmentFocus on systems modeling, architecture design, and requirements managementBroader engineering tasks, system integration, and technical support
Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, automotive, and complex systems industries

The Mbse System Engineer specializes in using model-based approaches like SysML to design and analyze complex systems, whereas the Systems Engineer has a broader role encompassing system development, integration, and support across various industries. Both roles require technical expertise, but Mbse System Engineers focus more on modeling and requirements management.

What are some common challenges faced by an MBSE System Engineer when implementing model-based approaches in traditional engineering environments?

MBSE System Engineers often encounter resistance to change when introducing model-based approaches in organizations accustomed to document-driven processes. Challenges include integrating new modeling tools with existing workflows, aligning stakeholders with varying levels of modeling expertise, and ensuring model consistency across multidisciplinary teams. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, patience during the transition period, and the ability to demonstrate the long-term benefits of MBSE, such as improved traceability and reduced development risk.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MBSE System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MBSE System Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering principles, model-based methodologies, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with MBSE tools such as Cameo, IBM Rhapsody, or Enterprise Architect, and familiarity with SysML or UML is standard; INCOSE certification can be advantageous. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly with multidisciplinary teams are standout soft skills. These competencies are vital for developing robust, consistent system architectures and ensuring effective collaboration throughout the engineering lifecycle.

Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Systems Engineer - Level 3 or 4 with a focus on ModelBased Systems Engineering (MBSE), located in Chandler, Arizona.

The MBSE Systems Engineer is responsible for using Cameo to capture and maintain the system architecture and ensuring robust requirements traceability between the Cameo system model and the baseline requirements in DOORS. This role serves as a key integrator between traditional requirementsbased systems engineering and modelbased representations, enabling consistent, traceable, and analyzable system definitions.

This position is 100% on site in Chandler, AZ.

Salary Level 3: $98,400 - $147,600

Salary Level 4: $122,800 - $184,200

Key Responsibilities

System Architecture Modeling (Cameo)

  • Develop and maintain systemlevel and subsystemlevel models in Cameo, including structural, behavioral, and interface views.

  • Capture system functions, interfaces, states, and data flows in the model to reflect the authoritative system architecture.

  • Support architecture trade studies by representing alternatives in the model and coordinating with stakeholders to assess impacts.

Requirements Traceability (Cameo DOORS)

  • Establish and maintain traceability between DOORS requirements and Cameo model elements (e.g., blocks, activities, interfaces).

  • Implement and maintain links, stereotypes, and relationships that support bidirectional traceability and impact analysis.

  • Regularly reconcile the Cameo model with the DOORS requirement baseline, ensuring consistency after requirement changes or model updates.

Model & Requirements Integration

  • Collaborate with systems engineers and domain leads to ensure that the Cameo model accurately reflects allocated requirements, interfaces, and constraints.

  • Support definition and refinement of modeling conventions, naming standards, and modeling patterns to align with program and enterprise MBSE practices.

  • Generate modelbased views, reports, and dashboards (from Cameo) that support design reviews, requirements reviews, and stakeholder communication.

Review & Configuration Support

  • Support technical reviews (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR) by providing architecture views and traceability evidence from Cameo and DOORS.

  • Assist in the configuration management of the system model and associated requirement artifacts, ensuring proper version control and baselining.

  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or ambiguities in the architecture or requirements trace and propose corrective actions.

CrossTeam Collaboration & Training

  • Work closely with systems, software, and hardware teams to ensure model content supports their planning and analysis needs.

  • Provide guidance to other engineers on how to interpret and use the model and its traceability information.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of MBSE processes, tooling, and best practices on the program.
