Mathematical Modeling Postdoc information
What is the difference between Mathematical Modeling Postdoc vs Data Scientist?
| Aspect | Mathematical Modeling Postdoc | Data Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field; PhD preferred |
| Work Environment | Academic research institutions, universities, research labs | Corporate, tech companies, startups, or consulting firms |
| Industry Usage | Research projects, academic publications, grant-funded studies | Business analytics, product development, data-driven decision making |
| Common Search & Comparison | Yes | Yes |
While both roles involve analytical skills and data handling, Mathematical Modeling Postdocs focus on academic research and developing theoretical models, whereas Data Scientists apply data analysis techniques to solve practical business problems. The choice depends on whether you prefer research-oriented work or industry applications.

Job description
Dr. Miraldi’s Immuno-Engineering Laboratory seeks a computational research fellow to build mathematical models of the immune system in vivo. These models will be constructed from cutting-edge, high-dimensional, immune-system measurements (e.g., single-cell genomics, chromatin state, proteomics). Our mathematical modeling frameworks span mechanistic (e.g., dynamic gene regulatory networks) to deep learning (e.g., prediction of cellular epigenomes from DNA sequence). Situated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, we are dedicated to the design of computational methods and systems-immunology studies that will ultimately improve the health of children. Through close collaboration with our physician and experimental colleagues, we iteratively test and refine our models, so that the models yield novel insights into immune-cell function and ultimately guide new therapeutic strategies in the context of autoimmunity, infectious disease and cancer. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with experimental immunologists, physicians and other computational biologists. The team will design and execute hybrid computational-experimental strategies that push the boundaries of both immunology and computational biology.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, execute, and record laboratory experiments, and analyze the data.
- Research and improve current methods and evaluate innovative techniques. Implement this knowledge in the Division/Department.
