What is a math tutor?

Math tutors are educators who provide personalized instruction to help students improve their understanding and performance in mathematics. They work with learners of all ages, from elementary school to college, and can assist with topics ranging from basic arithmetic to advanced calculus. Math tutors often identify individual learning needs, clarify difficult concepts, and help students build problem-solving skills. Sessions can take place in-person or online, and may be one-on-one or in small groups. Their goal is to boost students' confidence and academic success in math.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math tutor?

To thrive as a Math Tutor, you need a strong grasp of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with online tutoring platforms, virtual whiteboards, and educational software is often required. Patience, clear communication, and the ability to motivate and adapt to different learning styles are essential soft skills. These attributes help tutors effectively convey complex concepts, foster student confidence, and support academic success.

What are some common challenges faced by math tutors, and how can they effectively address diverse student learning needs?

Math tutors often encounter students with varying levels of confidence, foundational knowledge, and learning styles. A common challenge is identifying and bridging gaps in a student's understanding while keeping them engaged and motivated. Successful tutors use a variety of teaching methods, such as visual aids, real-life examples, and interactive problem-solving, to adapt to individual needs. Open communication, regular feedback, and patience are key to building trust and helping each student progress at their own pace.

How do you become a math tutor?

To become a math tutor, typically you need strong math skills and a good understanding of the subject, often demonstrated by relevant coursework or high school/college grades. Many tutoring positions require a background check and may prefer candidates with teaching experience or certifications such as a teaching credential or tutoring certification. You can find opportunities through tutoring companies, schools, or online platforms, and some roles may require flexible scheduling and good communication skills.

Is math tutoring in demand?

Math tutoring is in consistent demand as students seek additional help to improve their skills and academic performance. Tutors with strong subject knowledge and teaching skills can find opportunities in private, online, and tutoring centers, especially during peak academic periods like the school year and exam seasons.

We are a group of instructors at Mathnasium of Southeast Portland who are making a real difference in students' lives. Unlike other learning centers and tutoring services, our entire teaching philosophy revolves around teaching math in a way that makes sense to students. We find where a student is at in terms of their math abilities, and build them up from there.
We are a growing organization and are looking for instructors to join our team at our Southeast Portland location. If you're a college student or a recent graduate, this would be an ideal position, but we will consider all backgrounds. We teach in a study hall-type environment with students of all ages, but most of our students are in the K-8th grade range. Therefore, we are looking for future instructors who have solid math skills AND strong communication skills. We help our students solve their own problems, not just tell them what to do. (We are *not* a private tutoring facility, and we *do not* teach online!)
In addition to math knowledge and communication skills, the other quality we are looking for is coachability. We operate in a unique environment and we utilize a specific teaching methodology that has been time-tested, and bottom line, it works. Therefore, being able to take instruction and be open-minded is paramount. If you believe you have these qualities, please do apply!
We serve our students year-round, so this is an opportunity for regular work. Ideally, you would be available at least 3 days out of the 5 days that we are open, but we are flexible!. The more you can work, the better. There is no need to schedule your own students as they will come during our operating hours. And unlike a school, we don't require you to have a teaching certificate. We will require you to take a math assessment, and once your qualifications are reviewed and deemed sufficient, we will train you in our methodology.
Our backgrounds are diverse. Some of us have or are working towards our math degrees. Others have degrees in the sciences and humanities. Some of us are former school teachers. We are also athletes, musicians, and artists. Bottom line, all of us love teaching math, and love seeing that spark of understanding on a student's face. We work hard, and we love what we do.
We are in the midst of an aggressive hiring campaign. If your application matches our needs, it will be responded to within 1-3 business days! If you're interested in joining our team, we'd love to hear from you!
Address:
* Monthly earnings will vary based on hourly rate, experience, availability, staffing needs, etc.; Not a guaranteed amount.* High School applicants will have a starting wage of $16.80/hr.
*
All applicants will be required to take a math literacy test to demonstrate math proficiency, provide work authorization, and pass a background check.
* We operate in a dynamic environment, and the physical requirements for this position are very similar to that of a restaurant server: Must constantly move around the center and navigate confined spaces, constantly communicate and exchange accurate information, frequently move objects weighing up to 10 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs
Compensation: $17.50 - $18.25 per hour
