What is a math tutor?

Math tutors are educators who provide individualized or small group instruction to help students improve their understanding of mathematical concepts. They work with learners of various ages and skill levels, offering support in areas such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and test preparation. Math tutors assess students’ strengths and weaknesses, develop customized lessons, and use different teaching strategies to enhance learning. Their goal is to boost students’ confidence and academic performance in math. Sessions can take place in person or online, depending on the tutor and student preferences.

Can math tutors work remotely?

Math tutors can work remotely, often using online platforms and video conferencing tools to teach students. Many tutoring jobs now offer flexible schedules and require skills in digital communication and basic technology use.

What does a math tutor do?

A Math Tutor helps students with their math studies, either individually or in small groups. As a Math Tutor, your responsibilities and duties include assessing what mathematics material your students have mastered, where they need assistance, and how they learn best. You work patiently with your students, explaining and demonstrating the mathematics material they are learning in a variety of ways to help them understand it. You provide tips for studying and ample practice opportunities, such as math division drills, so that they can develop mastery of the material.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Tutor, you need a solid understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving ability, and usually at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with educational technology platforms like Zoom, Google Classroom, and interactive math software is often required. Patience, strong communication, and adaptability help tutors connect with students and tailor their approach to individual learning styles. These skills are crucial for effectively helping students grasp math concepts and achieve academic success.

How much do math tutors get paid?

Math tutors typically earn between $15 and $40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they work independently or for an organization. Tutors with specialized skills or certifications may command higher rates, and pay can vary based on whether sessions are in-person or online.

Is there a demand for math tutors?

Math tutors are in consistent demand due to ongoing needs in education, test preparation, and skill development. Opportunities exist in schools, tutoring centers, and online platforms, often requiring strong subject knowledge and teaching skills.

What is the difference between Math Tutor vs Math Teacher?

AspectMath Tutor
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in mathematics or education; certifications vary
Work EnvironmentOne-on-one or small group sessions, often flexible scheduling, private or online settings
Employer & IndustryPrivate tutoring companies, freelance, online platforms, schools
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for personalized instruction and flexible hours

Math Tutors focus on individualized instruction, usually working independently or online, with flexible hours. Math Teachers are employed by schools, follow a curriculum, and teach larger classes. Both roles require strong math skills, but Math Teachers typically need teaching credentials and work in educational institutions, while Math Tutors offer personalized support outside traditional classrooms.

How do math tutors typically tailor their teaching approach to accommodate different learning styles?

Math tutors often assess each student's individual strengths, weaknesses, and preferred learning styles—such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic—to personalize lesson plans and explanations. They may use a variety of teaching tools, including diagrams, real-world examples, and interactive problem-solving exercises. This flexibility helps students grasp complex concepts more effectively and builds their confidence. Tutors also regularly communicate with students and, when appropriate, parents or teachers to adjust strategies and maximize progress.

Job description

About the Role:
SiSTEM is hiring experienced math tutors to work with motivated students and families in the Austin area.
This is not a volume tutoring gig. Our tutors work as trusted academic partners with families who value expertise, helping students build real understanding, stronger problem-solving strategies, and confidence in math at every level.

If you can tutor any of the following, we want to hear from you:

Elementary Math (Grades K–5):
  • Number sense and arithmetic.
  • Fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Word problems and early problem-solving.
  • Multiplication and division fluency.
  • Introduction to geometry and measurement.
Middle School Math (Grades 6–8):
  • Pre-Algebra.
  • Algebra I.
  • Ratios, proportions, and probability.
  • Integers, expressions, and equations.
  • Geometry fundamentals.
High School Math (Grades 9–12):
  • Algebra I and II.
  • Geometry.
  • Trigonometry.
  • Pre-Calculus.
  • Calculus (AB and BC).
  • Statistics and Probability.
Advanced and Honors-Level Math:
  • Honors and Pre-AP Math.
  • AP Calculus AB / BC.
  • AP Statistics.
  • IB Mathematics.
  • Dual Credit College Math.
Test Prep Math Sections:
  • SAT Math.
  • ACT Math.
  • STAAR Math (Grades 3–8 and End-of-Course).
  • TSI Math.
  • ISEE / SSAT Quantitative Sections.
  • GED Math.

You do not need to tutor every level. If you specialize in elementary math only, or AP Calculus only, or anything in between, we want you on our team.
About SiSTEM:
SiSTEM is an academic guidance platform that builds personalized roadmaps for students in grades K–12. Every student on SiSTEM has a plan. Tutors are a key part of that plan and are matched to students based on specific needs, not random availability.

We started as a tutoring agency in Texas, grew to 300+ tutors serving 10,000+ students, and are now launching a platform that gives educators better tools, better-matched students, and the ability to build a real client base.

What You'll Do:
  • Work one-on-one with students in grades K–12 to provide focused math instruction at their level.
  • Help students develop deeper conceptual understanding, not just finish homework.
  • Build number sense, problem-solving strategies, and mathematical confidence.
  • Identify and close gaps in foundational skills that are holding students back.
  • Align your sessions with each student's broader academic roadmap through SiSTEM's planning tools.
  • Communicate with families on progress and strategy when appropriate.
  • Maintain high standards of preparation and professionalism.
What We're Looking For:
We are selective about who joins the SiSTEM team.
Strong candidates typically have:
  • 3+ years of teaching, tutoring, or academic mentoring experience in math
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the math levels listed above
  • Experience working with motivated students who are in honors, Pre-AP, AP, gifted, or test prep settings
  • A track record of helping students improve grades, build confidence, or master concepts they previously struggled with
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to make math click for students who think they're "not a math person"
  • Professional reliability
Bonus: Current or former math teachers, engineers or STEM professionals who tutor, educators with degrees in mathematics or math education, tutors with experience teaching multiple grade bands.

Why Tutors Join SiSTEM:
  • You set your own rates. And you keep 100% of what you earn.
  • Matched with students who fit your expertise. No random assignments. Students are matched to you based on subject, grade level, learning needs, and your teaching strengths.
  • Bring your current students with you. Already have clients? Add them to the platform for free. Use SiSTEM's tools to manage your existing students alongside new ones at no extra cost.
  • Families are already invested. SiSTEM parents are paying for a plan. They're engaged, responsive, and serious about their child's growth.
  • We handle the marketing. You don't have to find clients. We bring families to you.
  • Tools to manage your business. Scheduling, session tracking, and student relationship tools built into the platform.
  • Build a long-term client base. Students on SiSTEM stay for years, not weeks.
