What is a math software engineer?

Math Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize software that performs complex mathematical computations. They often work on algorithms, numerical analysis, and simulation tools used in scientific research, finance, engineering, or data analysis. Their work ensures that mathematical models and computations are both accurate and efficient within various applications. Math Software Engineers typically have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.

How do math software engineers typically collaborate with other teams during the development process?

Math Software Engineers often work closely with cross-functional teams, such as data scientists, product managers, and front-end developers, to ensure mathematical models and algorithms are accurately implemented in software products. Collaboration involves regular meetings to discuss requirements, problem-solving sessions to address computational challenges, and code reviews for maintaining mathematical integrity. Communicating complex mathematical concepts in an accessible way is a key part of the role, enabling teams to create robust and efficient solutions that meet user needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Software Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm development, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, along with experience using mathematical libraries and tools like NumPy or SciPy, is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are valuable soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills ensure the development of robust, efficient, and accurate mathematical software solutions that meet complex computational requirements.

Job description

Job Summary:
Kymeta Corporation is revolutionizing satellite communications through Intelligent Communications Platforms. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong experience in embedded systems development and real-time software engineering to design, develop, and optimize software that interfaces closely with hardware.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and deliver antenna control software across Kymeta’s multi-band, multi-orbit satellite systems: Control loop design, acquisition, pointing, and tracking algorithm development
• System-level orchestration from low-level drivers to adaptive logic
• Integration of AI/ML technologies from the cloud to the edge
• Build the enabling software infrastructure: Interfaces, data pipelines, finite-state machines, diagnostics, and fault handling
• Embedded implementations in C/C++ on constrained Linux or real-time platforms
• Collaborate across hardware, RF, systems, and cloud teams to ensure system cohesion
• Drive the entire development lifecycle—from simulation to field deployment, with a mindset of hyper-ownership that includes engaging stakeholders early, maintaining alignment throughout development, and validating post-delivery to ensure program success
• Promote reliability, testability, and long-term maintainability throughout the codebase
• Active Secret Clearance, or clearance held within the past five years. Experience working in secure, classified environments.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong experience in embedded systems development and real-time software engineering
• Deep experience in C/C++
• Solid understanding of embedded Linux or RTOS environments
• Ability to contribute across the full software lifecycle—from design through deployment and support
• Active Secret Clearance, or clearance held within the past five years
• Experience working in secure, classified environments
Preferred:
• Strong background in satellite communication systems, wireless technologies, or related domains
• Track record of implementing complex mathematical models in embedded or real-time systems
• Practical experience integrating cloud platforms, IoT frameworks, or AI/ML technologies with edge devices
• Hands-on experience with Extended Kalman Filters (EKFs) and vehicle localization
• M.S. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent knowledge and experience
Company:
Kymeta revolutionizes satellite communications through Intelligent Communications Platforms (ICPs). Founded in 2012, the company is headquartered in Redmond, USA, with a team of 201-500 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
