What does a math curriculum writer do?

As a math curriculum writer, your job is to write mathematics textbooks and other instructional content for students. This includes things like deciding which equations to teach, what sample problems to include, and what sample lessons to provide to teachers. You often create units of study, improve existing books and processes, and curate questions based on relevant real-world considerations. You may also use specialized software to write and display the math content in the final textbook. Most math curriculum writers focus on the K-12 grade range, as the higher levels become so specialized that no individual writer is able to make content for all classes.

What does a math curriculum writer do?

A Math Curriculum Writer is responsible for designing, developing, and organizing instructional materials and lesson plans for mathematics courses. They work to ensure that the curriculum aligns with educational standards, such as Common Core or state-specific requirements. Their role often involves researching best practices in math education, collaborating with teachers and subject matter experts, and revising materials based on feedback and student needs. Ultimately, their goal is to create engaging, effective, and accessible math resources that help students achieve learning objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math curriculum writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Curriculum Writer, you need a strong background in mathematics, education, and curriculum development, typically supported by a teaching credential or degree in math education. Familiarity with educational standards (such as Common Core), proficiency in digital curriculum design tools, and experience with learning management systems are often required. Strong written communication, creativity, and collaboration skills help create engaging materials and work effectively with educators and editors. These skills ensure that math curricula are accurate, accessible, and aligned with educational goals, directly impacting student learning outcomes.

What are some typical challenges math curriculum writers face when aligning materials to educational standards?

Math Curriculum Writers often encounter challenges in ensuring their materials meet diverse state and national standards while remaining engaging and accessible for students. Balancing rigorous content with clarity and grade-appropriate activities can be demanding, especially with frequent updates to standards like Common Core. Additionally, writers must collaborate closely with educators and subject matter experts to gather feedback and refine lessons, which requires strong communication and adaptability. Staying current with best practices and integrating technology are also ongoing aspects of the role.

Job description

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. Itโ€™s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

If you want to use your skills to make a difference for the world, Level is seeking an experienced educator and instructional designer to develop exceptional mathematics content. As a Senior Learning Designer, Math, you'll craft engaging pedagogy, practice exercises, and assessments that bring our virtual teacher (\"the Guide\") to life. This role combines deep classroom teaching expertise (or equivalent real-world mathematical experience) with learning science principles and digital instructional design to create scalable, high-quality educational experiences for students.

What You Will Do

Develop High-Quality Mathematics Content

  • Write pedagogy, practice exercises, and assessments from the ground up in grades K-12 mathematics

  • Sequence lessons to align with cognitive development, prerequisite knowledge, and learning progressions

  • Develop and adapt curriculum to the latest research and best practices

  • Anticipate common mistakes and misconceptions and build corrective pathways

Collaborate Across Disciplines

  • Work within our content \"toolkit\" (interactive formats, assessment structures, pedagogical models) to design effective learning experiences

  • Partner with designers, behavioral scientists, technologists, and SDT experts to bring our virtual teacher to life

  • Integrate motivational principles (e.g., self-determination theory, growth mindset, self-efficacy) into content design

Apply Learning Science & Instructional Design

  • Leverage principles of cognitive load theory, pacing, mastery learning, and common misconception analysis

  • Design scaffolded instruction that supports learner-centered experiences

  • Create accurate, clear, and engaging content that works in one-on-one digital settings

Produce Content Efficiently

  • Generate high-quality modules with attention to detail and consistency

  • Translate hands-on teaching experience or applied mathematical expertise into effective digital pedagogy

  • Contribute to repeatable content creation systems

Qualifications
  • Teaching or Applied Math Experience: 5+ years of classroom teaching OR a strong engineering, mathematics, or related technical degree combined with real-world quantitative work experience and some current or prior classroom teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts in accessible, engaging ways

  • Instructional Design Expertise: Strong background in instructional design with a track record of designing lessons, learning sequences, and assessments for digital and interactive learning environments

  • Learning Science Foundation: Deep understanding of cognitive development, learning dependencies, common misconceptions, and cognitive load management, with ability to translate theory into effective teaching practices

  • Collaboration Skills: Proven ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to creative and technical constraints while maintaining pedagogical quality

Need to Have
  • 5+ years of mathematics teaching experience, mathematics curriculum development, or a background in engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field paired with real-world professional experience and at least some classroom teaching experience

  • Strong instructional design background with demonstrated lesson and assessment design

  • Deep knowledge of how students learn mathematics, including common misconceptions and developmental progressions

  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to produce clear, concise content

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work efficiently at scale

  • Comfort working collaboratively with designers, technologists, and behavioral scientists

  • Flexibility and interest in developing content that may range from elementary school to high school mathematics

Nice to Have
  • Technical fluency and ease adopting new tools, platforms, and AI-assisted workflows

  • Hands-on experience building applications - formal programming or engineering background a strong plus

  • Prior experience in edtech or digital content creation

  • Formal training in education, instructional design, or learning sciences, mathematics, or engineering

  • Experience designing content for adaptive or personalized learning systems

  • Familiarity with self-determination theory or other motivational frameworks in education

  • Experience with content production workflows and systems
