What does a materials science analyst do?

A Materials Science Analyst studies the properties, structure, and performance of various materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. They use scientific techniques and data analysis to evaluate how materials behave under different conditions and recommend improvements for manufacturing or product development. Their work supports industries like aerospace, automotive, electronics, and healthcare by ensuring materials meet safety, quality, and performance standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a materials science analyst?

To excel as a Materials Science Analyst, you need a solid background in materials engineering or chemistry, strong analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and materials modeling software is often required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with research or production teams. These skills ensure accurate analysis, innovative solutions, and successful project outcomes in materials development and quality control.

How does a materials science analyst typically collaborate with engineers and product development teams?

Materials Science Analysts work closely with engineers and product development teams by providing insights on material properties and recommending suitable materials for specific applications. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss testing results, troubleshoot material-related issues, and ensure that the selected materials meet performance, safety, and cost requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as analysts translate complex technical data into actionable recommendations for design and manufacturing teams.

What is the difference between Materials Science Analyst vs Materials Engineer?

AspectMaterials Science AnalystMaterials Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in materials science, chemistry, or related field; often some certificationsBachelor's or higher in materials engineering or related field; professional engineering license may be preferred
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilities, quality control labsDesign, develop, and test materials; manufacturing settings, R&D labs

  • Mentoring junior staff by providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative, inclusive team environment
You will have the following skills and qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience post-graduation in the materials science space. Experience related to glass or ceramics will be considered a plus
  • Proven track record in securing grants, driving funding initiatives, or delivering solutions that meet client needs. Experience in a role facing outside of your organization (e.g., customer-facing or supply chain coordination) is a plus
  • Experience in any of the following: product safety/liability/recalls; construction defect claims; subrogation; failure to perform/equip; or intellectual property
  • Experience with managing a small team of 2-5 team members
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
