What are materials designers?

Materials designers are professionals who create and develop new materials or improve existing ones to meet specific performance, sustainability, or aesthetic requirements. They use scientific knowledge of chemistry, physics, and engineering, often leveraging advanced technologies such as computer modeling and laboratory analysis. Materials designers work in industries such as fashion, automotive, aerospace, and electronics to develop materials like textiles, polymers, metals, and composites. Their goal is to innovate materials that offer better functionality, durability, or environmental benefits. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and product designers throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Materials Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Materials Designer, you need expertise in material science, design principles, and a relevant degree in engineering, chemistry, or industrial design. Familiarity with CAD software, materials simulation tools, and knowledge of manufacturing processes are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for developing innovative materials that meet technical, aesthetic, and sustainability requirements in various industries.

What are some common challenges Materials Designers face when developing new materials for products?

Materials Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing material performance with cost-effectiveness, ensuring compatibility with manufacturing processes, and meeting strict environmental or regulatory standards. Collaborating closely with engineers, product designers, and suppliers is vital to address these challenges and ensure the new material meets all technical and aesthetic requirements. Staying updated on emerging materials and sustainability trends is also crucial for success in this role.

Job description

* LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY**
Vasile Elevator is a market-leading designer, manufacturer, and installer of commercial elevator interiors, as well as a national supplier of products to the US elevator contractor market. Founded in 1999 with principal operations in South Florida, we continue to reinvest in our vision of shortening the path to sophisticated design and high-value products for our growing portfolio of clients. Come advance with us!
Mission The Interior Designer collaborates closely with Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Field Operations to ensure that all design concepts, material selections, and aesthetic specifications align with customer expectations and project requirements. This role bridges creative vision and technical feasibility to deliver interior solutions that are functional, code-compliant, and visually impactful—ensuring a seamless integration into the overall elevator modernization or new installation process.
Responsibilities/Functions

•        Project Intake – gather design intake information from and with the  Sales Reps, which may include on-site visits to survey existing elevators and lobbies, in order to facilitate design work for selected opportunities.
·         Meetings - lead in-person client meetings to better understand design preferences and project needs, narrowing the focus from seemingly unlimited options to curated configurations and material selections.
·         Production - prepare sketches, renderings, and presentations for client review, feedback and approval.  Order, track and log material samples for client review.
·         Approvals – provide deliverables and collateral required for customer to make final design decisions.  Gather final approvals of materials & designs with acceptable documentation for project management.  This may include material sample transmittals, signatures on labled material samples and mock-ups, creating digitally formatted final design presentations as well as physical rendering display boards.
·         Material Sample Management – maintain and organize the in-house Material Sample Library and Showroom.  Coordinate with vendors to ensure samples are relevant, code compliant for use in elevators, and available for current and future projects.  Assist with the virtual inventory of remnant materials with the goal of specifying them into our design-build projects. Explore and review any new materials suitable for elevator interior use.  Ensure Showroom remains clean and organized, with functioning and relevant displays to assist with client meetings.
•        Marketing Support – support the maintenance of a digital rendering library and completed project portfolio for internal use by design department,  sales, and marketing. Attend industry events and trade shows to assist with marketing and client engagement initiatives. Add new renderings to our lobby slideshow. Do site visits of completed projects worthy of After Photos, take photos, clean them up, and add to our After Photo library. Send After Photos to vendors whose materials were used in the project. Support in maintaining the website updated with new projects. Assist in the beautification process for Vasile Elevator Facility with materials, renderings, vendors, etc.
•        Material Quotes – assist in obtaining material pricing from vendors by performing basic take-offs and calculations. Support the evaluation of materials for weight restrictions, performance, compliance, and suitability for use in elevator interiors.
•        Engineering Review – review in-house engineering submittals for our design-build projects  for consistency with the design intent before final release to customer.
•        Errands – perform occasional errands for design-related needs, such as material drop-offs, vendor visits, or supply pickups. Company vehicle and/or mileage reimbursement provided.
All other duties as assigned
Education, Skills & Experience

·      College degree required – must possess a minimum 2-year degree with Interior Design or Architecture; hiring bias will be given to candidates with 4-year degrees.  Must show sufficient experience in lieu of college degree in order to be considered and must be able to demonstrate ample knowledge of materials and design at interview.
Experience

·      Customer service experience – required
·      Experience creating & interpreting ID drawings – required
·      Proficiency with MS Office – required
·      Proficiency with AutoCAD, Photoshop, Revit, Adobe Illustrator, Canva or similar
