Struers, the world’s leading manufacturer of material-testing equipment and consumables, is seeking a Materials Application Engineer to expand our technical and sales support capabilities for both prospective and existing customers. This position is part of our Applications team and is based at our U.S. headquarters in Westlake, Ohio.

Our customers include Fortune 500 companies in the automotive, electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace industries.

Position Overview

The Materials Application Engineer serves as a key technical expert supporting both internal teams and external customers across our materials testing product line. This role partners closely with Sales, Marketing, and customers to provide hands-on technical support, product demonstrations, application development, and training. Some travel will take place nationally, with occasional international travel.

The ideal candidate combines strong materialographic expertise with presentation skills, a structured problem-solving approach, and a passion for educating customers.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and applications support for Struers’ materials testing equipment to internal and external customers
  • Prepare and evaluate customer samples; develop preparation procedures and best practices
  • Conduct product demonstrations in-house, on-site at customer facilities, at trade shows, and via virtual platforms
  • Deliver technical training programs for customers and internal teams
  • Develop and implement educational training materials and courses
  • Support Sales in technical discussions, contributing to successful opportunity conversion
  • Present technical content through webinars, conferences, and industry events
  • Assist customers in troubleshooting and resolving quality issues
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including Lean activities such as 5S

Qualifications

  • Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with materialographic sample preparation and microscopy required
  • Experience with hardness testing and/or image analysis software preferred
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, including overnight travel
  • Familiarity with ISO and ASTM standards (including ISO 17025, ASTM E10, E18, E92/E384)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and technical software applications
  • Structured and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong presentation and product demonstration skills (in person and virtual)
  • Training and facilitation capability
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work cross-functionally and globally
