A Day in the Life
The R&D Engineer II will join the Wound Management R/D Engineering COE and play a key role in new product development and lifecycle support of wound closure products. This position will contribute to the design and development of surgical sutures, and enabling technologies, working closely with NPD core teams to translate customer needs into safe, effective, and commercially successful products. This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on patient outcomes through the advancement of world-class wound closure solutions.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties as assigned:
  • Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots, and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
  • Designs studies to investigate root cause or identify process parameters.
  • Supports product development activities.
  • Provides feedback on machine design and prototypes.
  • Designs fixturing for manufacturing equipment or testing.
  • Creates prototype test samples.
  • Supports the voice of customer and pre-clinical studies.
  • Prepares and tracks test samples.
  • Assists in DOE planning and execution.
  • Performs statistical analysis and presents results.
  • Compose engineering reports.
  • Research technical and procedural topics and reports of findings to groups.
  • Work will be performed in R&D laboratories and in manufacturing facilities.

Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 0 years relevant experience.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to take ownership of assignments and drive work forward with appropriate guidance
  • Demonstrates emerging leadership potential through influence, accountability, strong communication, and a willingness to lead technical activities and project deliverables.

Nice to Have
  • Specialization in absorbable polymers, surgical needles, or sutures
  • Experience in the medical device industry
  • Practical experience and theoretical knowledge in the one or more of the following areas:
    • Polymer development and manufacturing
    • Fiber extrusion
    • Textile manufacturing
    • Material characterization
    • Sterile barrier packaging design for medical devices
    • High volume manufacturing assembly processes
  • Ability to apply statistical methods and science-based decisions to design experiments and implement improvements
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality technical work within project schedules and timelines. Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Must be team oriented, with the ability to work well on common deliverables with diverse cross-functional teams and to interact at the highest professional manner with all organizational levels

  • Participation in pre-clinical in vivo labs, observing cases in hospitals and through customer interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects with a strong problem-solving ability.
  • Experience with DRM / DFSS, Lean Sigma, or Green/Black Belt Lean Sigma certification
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint)
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills to successfully partner on varying levels ranging from cross functional to global multi-site and multi-business unit

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$88,800.00 - $133,200.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
