Material Handler

Seeking a Material Handler ($20/hr-$23/hr) The Material Handler exercises judgment in receiving, inspecting, handling, and storing materials by verifying conformance to specifications, assessing handling and safety requirements, ensuring accurate inventory status, evaluating material quality and integrity, and determining proper storage locations to maintain safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Job Duties:

  • Perform a variety of related distribution activities and tasks as assigned. Handle and transport various material types and shapes including chemicals and gases.
  • Operate common material handling equipment to include, but not limited to, hand truck, pallet jack, carts, ladders, tape machine, banding tools, stretch wrap machine, loading dock, and forklift.
  • Operate information system hardware including data entry terminals, PC, scanners, label printers and laser jet printers.
  • Provide material trace-ability through accurate labeling, and documentation of transactions of material movement.
  • Match and verify material descriptions, specifications, quantities and characteristics to documents and data base information.
  • Utilize storage space efficiently to maximize cube, while maintaining safety and protection to material and the environment. Provide FIFO (first in first out) material rotation.
  • Interact as the initial contact with the supplier, vendor, requestor, and/or carrier, for receipt and distribution of materials, including point of use delivery and staging.
  • Provide signature endorsement of ownership of SCO materials to be in accurate and quality condition.
  • Load and unload products and materials as required, to and from supplier, vendor, and/or carrier vehicles.
  • Perform and report cycle counting of storeroom materials.
  • Participate actively in housekeeping and organization of materials, to maintain safe, clean, neat and organized area/s.
  • File and distribute documents and records.
  • Communicate activities with team members and internal customers, to optimize the team efficiency and overall productivity.
  • Prioritize workload to best service customers, manage time and improve productivity.
  • Provide positive customer service and demonstrate good telephone skills.
  • Work overtime as needed or requested.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills to suggest needed reconciliation or ideas towards continuous improvement.

Position Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous material handling experience is preferred. Candidates must possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals and follow and retain verbal and written instructions. Attention to detail is essential to accurately inspect materials and packaging for quality and integrity. Knowledge of material handling practices, inventory control, space utilization, and materials management principles is desirable, along with the ability to apply those concepts in daily operations. Must be able to obtain and maintain forklift certification through the SCO forklift certification program and demonstrate a strong commitment to safe equipment operation. Role requires adaptability, the ability to manage shifting priorities and frequent interruptions, and a customer-focused approach to supporting internal stakeholders. Must also be capable of performing repetitive tasks for extended periods, including similar assignments for up to two-hour increments or throughout an entire workday as business needs require.

To ensure a safe work environment while meeting the physical demands of the job, you must be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Ability to sit / stand / walk / bend / twist / crouch / kneel / climb as required for various periods of time
  • Ability to lift / carry / push / pull up to 50 pounds. Occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Required to reach, and to manipulate using hands and fingers
  • Ability to use office equipment, phones, laptop effectively for various amounts of time throughout the day
  • Ability to work inside and outside as needed in a non-climate or noise controlled environment occasionally as needed.
  • Repetitive use of the arms, wrist, and hands (grasping, squeezing, keyboarding) and the ability to reach above the shoulders is frequently required.
  • Ability to frequently push, pull, or lift various material types and shapes weighing 100 to 3000 pounds or greater, by mechanical means with the use of common material handling equipment.
