Job description

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist is accountable to the Administrative Director of the laboratory or a laboratory supervisor.  The CLS-G will work cooperatively in conjunction with the Laboratory Director, Lab Supervisors, Pathologists and fellow employees in order to assure high quality laboratory services for all age groups from infants to geriatric.  

Education: Bachelors degree in science or a degree from a Medical Technology Program.

License and Certification: LSBME Licensed as Clinical Lab Scientists, CLS-G or CLS-S

TECHNICAL TASKS

  1. Performs all high complexity procedures in all areas of the clinical laboratory that require the exercise of independent judgement and con assist in the blood bank.
  2. Completes all work according to policy and procedure.
  3. Able to operate all laboratory equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  4. Assures that all specimens are properly identified and of acceptable condition for accurate results.
  5. Able to handle routine and stat specimens efficiently to meet the required turnaround times for each.
  6. Able to perform all procedures in the laboratory regardless of difficulty.
  7. Assist the Clinical Support Assistants with phlebotomy, specimen accessioning, phone requests and customer inquiries.
  8. Maintains appropriate levels of inventory and capable of taking the annual inventory.
  9. Demonstrates a complete understanding of all policies and procedures.
  10. Capable of assessing and correlating new procedures that are to be implemented in the laboratory. Prepares procedure/policy drafts for the new procedure.
  11. Capable of assisting with certification inspections (CAP, JCAH, etc.).
  12. Capable of being trained as an LCDM (laboratory information system analyst).
  13. Capable of taking call for the laboratory/blood bank if necessary. Can be called on to act in the absence of the Lab Director or Supervisor.
  14. CRITICAL THINKING
    1. Anticipates, organizes and prioritizes the department/laboratory work, in accordance with policy and procedure, in order to satisfy customer expectations (TAT, accuracy, critical, fax requests, etc.).
    2. Capable of reviewing QC data and initiate corrective action with the QC Officer as necessary.
    3. Capable of supervising the overall training of new CLS and MLT personnel
    4. Demonstrates good judgement in handling situations not covered by written instructions.
    5. Has the organization and foresight to reconcile department logs efficiently, completely and with the frequency required for efficient turn around.
    6. Regularly consults with other laboratory personnel or supervisors in areas of uncertainty to assure accuracy and efficiency.
    7. Willing and able to convey information/instructions accurately, positively and effectively to other laboratory personnel to assure accurate and timely outcomes.
    8. Promptly reports to the supervisor/director any dangerous work condition or non-compliance with the department/hospital policy which may endanger the health/lives of the laboratory personnel or, affect the continuance of service to our customers.
    9. Exercises exemplary professional and independent judgement in evaluating specimen integrity, required specimen types, result accuracy and result validity and, initiates or carries out the corrective action that assures valid and accurate results.
    10. Capable of being sent for offsite instrument training and assist in preparing this instrument for use in the laboratory/blood bank.
    11. Able to make positive critiques and useful suggestions of the work practices that contribute to the productivity, efficiency and accuracy of the laboratories performance.
    12. Able to correlate laboratory methods and patient test results with age specific population criteria (i.e. neonates, pediatrics, adults, geriatric).
