Job description

Library Director โ€“ Shreve Memorial Library (LA)

The Shreve Memorial Library (LA) Board of Control is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic library leader to help shape a vision for the libraryโ€™s future as its next Library Director. Shreve Memorial Library has 22 physical locations (21 branches and an administrative center), a mobile library, and a staff of 154 fullโ€‘time equivalents. The library serves Caddo Parish, which has a population of over 240,000 residents. Offering a plethora of public programs, Shreve Memorial Library hosts successful largeโ€‘scale annual events such as Author Faires, the Childrenโ€™s Book Festival, and One Book One Parish, and joins forces with community partners to contribute services towards events like ArtBreak.

Key initiatives for this role will include fostering a positive staff culture of inclusivity, implementation of a recently drafted technology plan, execution of a systemโ€‘wide capital improvement plan, building upon existing community partnerships, and forging new connections to create additional opportunities for library users to dream, discover, and do.

Shreveport sits in northwest Louisiana and is the stateโ€™s thirdโ€‘largest city. Itโ€™s a hub for education, business, and culture in the Arkโ€‘Laโ€‘Tex region, where Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. As the seat of Caddo Parish, Shreveport also stretches into Bossier Parish and borders Bossier City. These two cities, often called the twin cities, offer many amenities for both residents and visitors. Overlooking the Red River, Shreveport has plenty of entertainment, from theaters and museums to local food and casinos. The city hosts festivals and events all year, including the Mudbug Madness Cajun Festival, Mardi Gras parades, and Red River Revel Arts Festival. Several colleges and universities are based here, including Centenary College, LSU Shreveport, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Baptist University, Bossier Parish Community College, and Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will direct the operations of the 21โ€‘branch library system; develop and recommend library policies to the library board of control; play a leading role in tax elections, bond issues, and other funding initiatives; manage a detailed budget and communicate fiduciary needs to the board. This individual will develop the overall vision, goals, and objectives of the library; be heavily involved in capital programs; analyze and improve the libraryโ€™s public services, facilities, technology, staff development, and update the library board on current methods and trends. Additional responsibilities include making decisions concerning personnel, application of policies, and maintenance of facilities, systems, and grounds. The director will represent the library in the community and at other governmental and professional organizational meetings, and will cultivate a courteous, competent, customerโ€‘focused environment that is welcoming to the public. For a full listing of responsibilities, can be found in the job description link on the Bradbury Miller Associates website.

Must have certification by the Louisiana Board of Library Examiners or be able to attain certification within the first year of employment. Must have a good driving record with no DWI violations within the past five years and no other moving violations within the past year.
