What is a Masters in Fine Art?

A Masters in Fine Art (MFA) is a graduate-level degree focused on the study and practice of the visual, performing, or creative arts. Typically, it allows students to specialize in areas such as painting, sculpture, photography, creative writing, or theater. The MFA emphasizes both the development of artistic skills and critical engagement with contemporary art practices. Graduates often pursue careers as professional artists, educators, or in creative industries. The program usually combines studio work, seminars, and critical theory over two to three years.

What types of collaborative projects or interdisciplinary work can graduates with a Masters in Fine Art expect to engage in?

Graduates with a Masters in Fine Art often participate in collaborative projects that span multiple disciplines, such as working with designers, curators, writers, or technologists on exhibitions, public installations, or multimedia presentations. These collaborations can take place in galleries, museums, educational institutions, or even within community-based art initiatives. It also provides skills in critical thinking, visual communication, and technical techniques that can be applied in creative industries, museums, and cultural organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate, and why are they important?

Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, digital fabrication equipment, or specialized studio technologies is often required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and the ability to accept and act on critique set standout MFA professionals apart. These skills enable artists to produce innovative work, collaborate effectively, and succeed in competitive creative industries.

Is a Master's in Fine Arts worth it?

A Master's in Fine Arts (MFA) can enhance artistic skills, provide professional networking opportunities, and improve job prospects in fields such as teaching, gallery work, or arts administration. However, the degree does not guarantee high income, and many artists find success through portfolios and experience rather than formal education alone.

Job description

Senior Graphic Designer-Sharper Image

Who We Are

Founded in California in 1999, MerchSource is part of ThreeSixty Group — a global brand house delivering innovative, high-quality consumer products to major retailers worldwide.

Our portfolio includes iconic brands such as Sharper Image, FAO Schwarz, and Vornado — each with decades of heritage. Operating across diverse product categories, we bring thoughtful design and innovation to everyday life.

Headquartered in Irvine, CA with global operations, we are a highly collaborative organization where design plays a central role in shaping products from concept through launch.

About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Graphic Designer, Sharper Image to drive execution across physical retail touchpoints from concept through production.

Reporting to the Art Director, this role sits within a multidisciplinary design organization and focuses on bringing creative vision to life across packaging, retail POS, and in-store display.

Operating at the intersection of design and production, this role translates creative direction into high-quality, production-ready deliverables that meet both brand and commercial objectives.

This role is suited for a designer with strong craft and technical expertise in print and packaging — someone who thrives in execution, understands production realities, and ensures design integrity from concept through shelf.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Execution (Hands-On)

  • Execute packaging, retail POS, and in-store display from concept through production
  • Translate creative direction into clear, compelling, and production-ready design solutions
  • Explore concepts from incremental to breakthrough, pushing creative boundaries while maintaining commercial impact
  • Develop layouts, typography, color systems, and graphic assets across product lines
  • Create and refine packaging graphics, die lines, and structural artwork integration
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality across all physical deliverables
  • Prepare, organize, and finalize print-ready files with strong attention to technical requirements

Project Ownership & Collaboration

  • Own assigned projects from kickoff through final production handoff
  • Collaborate closely with Art Directors and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on creative intent
  • Partner with Product Development, Production, and overseas teams to ensure feasibility and execution accuracy
  • Communicate proactively on timelines, risks, and production challenges
  • Incorporate feedback efficiently while maintaining design integrity
  • Bring a strong passion for design, actively engaging in team critiques and contributing to a highly collaborative, feedback-driven creative environment

Brand Systems & Design Contribution

  • Apply and uphold brand systems consistently across packaging and retail touchpoints
  • Create and scale brand style guides across multi-category packaging systems
  • Identify opportunities to improve consistency, clarity, and efficiency across product lines
  • Contribute to concept development with a focus on translating ideas into scalable design systems
  • Bring thoughtful, system-driven solutions that balance creativity with manufacturability

Qualifications

Required

  • 8–12+ years of professional design experience within CPG, consumer electronics, or retail-focused environments
  • BA/BS in Graphic Design, Fine Art, or related field
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in packaging, retail displays, and physical product graphics
  • Deep understanding of packaging production, print processes, die lines, materials, and file preparation for manufacturing
  • Exceptional eye for typography, layout, color, and visual hierarchy with a high level of craft
  • Experience creating, interpreting, and applying brand style guides across physical products and packaging systems
  • Ability to translate creative direction into polished, production-ready work
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)

Preferred

  • Experience working with overseas factories and production partners
  • Experience with KeyShot or similar tools for packaging/product visualization
  • Strong photo retouching and compositing skills for packaging graphics
  • Familiarity with structural packaging considerations and retail display systems
  • Working knowledge of AI-powered creative tools and workflow integration

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Highly collaborative culture across design, sales, marketing, and product teams
  • Opportunity to work on nationally recognized brands across physical retail
  • Hands-on role with direct impact on products seen in-store
  • 4 days onsite in Irvine, CA, with remote work on Fridays
