Position Type: Full-Time, Secondary Educator
License Area: Utah Secondary or CTE Educator License preferred OR active Utah DOPL license in Physical Therapy, Physical Therapist Assistant, or Athletic Training. Industry professionals seeking to transition into education are encouraged to apply.
Position Purpose
Turn your clinical passion into their future profession - Join the team at Canyons Technical Education Center (soon to be the Canyons Innovation Center) and help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals through hands-on, real-world learning in physical therapy, exercise science, and sports medicine. This unique teaching opportunity blends clinical expertise with innovative Career and Technical Education in a state-of-the-art learning environment.
Whether you are a certified teacher with a passion for kinesiology, or a licensed sports medicine professional looking to transition into teaching full-time, we want your expertise. Drop the clinic burnout or the standard classroom routine, and inspire future healthcare leaders in a space designed for innovation.
The primary instructional focus of this role is delivering hands-on training in Physical Therapy Introduction and Exercise Science / Sports Medicine. You will play a vital role in helping high school students discover career pathways in rehabilitation, athletic training, and clinical sports medicine.
Upon attaching this endorsement to your Utah Educator License, you will be approved to lead the following primary and elective courses:
  • Physical Therapy Introduction (Core Focus)
  • Exercise Science / Sports Medicine (Core Focus)
  • Health Science Introduction & Health Science Capstone

Core Competencies
Your daily teaching schedule will center heavily around physical therapy protocols, body mechanics, and acute injury management. Key competencies include:
  1. Physical Therapy & Rehab Instruction

    • Teach the foundations of physical therapy, including the tissue healing process, therapeutic modalities, and rehabilitation techniques.

    • Lead hands-on lab sessions to assess and train students in practical clinical skills:
      • Common athletic taping (ankle, wrist, and foot).
      • Elastic bandage wrapping techniques for joint swelling management.
      • Correct splinting techniques for bone and joint injuries.
  1. Kinesiology & Exercise Physiology
    • Instruct students on how the nervous, muscular, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems interact at rest and during physical exertion.
    • Apply principles of biomechanics and anatomy to analyze, improve, and maintain physiological health.
    • Guide students through designing age- and developmentally appropriate exercise prescriptions for strength, endurance, and weight control.

  1. Anatomy & Human Body Systems
    • Deliver comprehensive lessons on animal cell structures, tissue organization, and the form/structure of all 11 major human body systems (with heavy emphasis on the Musculoskeletal, Nervous, and Cardiovascular systems).
  1. Career & Technical Education (CTE) Essentials
    • Integrate state strands and standards into daily lesson plans.
    • Partner with industry advisory boards to keep the curriculum aligned with real-world job market needs.
    • Mentor students through Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs).

Qualifications & Endorsement Requirements
Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds checks.
Requires Applicants must hold a current Utah Educator License (Secondary or CTE Education) and meet the USBE Endorsement criteria. A background as a licensed Physical Therapist (PT), Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), or Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is highly advantageous.
Prerequisite
Demonstrate an understanding of CTE basics through one of the following:
    • Completion of the USBE course: CTE Orientation .
    • Three (3) years of full-time CTE teaching experience in Utah.
    • A currently held professional-level CTE endorsement.

OR
    • Active Utah DOPL License in Physical Therapy or Athletic Training.

Endorsement Status
    • Associate Level: Meet the prerequisite and complete at least one of the core competency areas listed below.
    • Professional Level: Meet the prerequisite and complete all three core competency areas listed below.
