The Department of Kinesiology is seeking to fill multiple areas within the program of Exercise Science.  The Assistant Professor will primarily teach undergraduate and graduate classes in the Department of Kinesiology to a diverse group of students who could potentially be Exercise Science, Physical Education, Sport Administration, and Sport and Performance Psychology majors. The faculty member will also engage in scholarly activity at the R2 level, seek external funding, serve on committees at all levels of faculty governance, provide academic advising to students, chair and serve on thesis committees, and maintain collaborative relationships within and outside the Department, including community outreach. Primary teaching responsibilities and specific assignments will depend upon Department needs and priorities.

Overview

The Department of Kinesiology is in the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Fresno. The Department is one of the largest on campus and has approximately 1,000 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor's degrees in Kinesiology. Undergraduate Kinesiology degrees include Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Sport Administration. In addition, the Department has approximately 75 graduate students pursuing Master's degrees in either Athletic Training,  Exercise Science, Sport and Performance Psychology, or Sport Administration. The faculty have been honored with numerous awards and recognitions in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service; they come from diverse backgrounds, are student-oriented, and are committed to maintaining a collegial working environment.

Our Students:  Fresno State is recognized as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American/Native American/Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). The University is committed to inclusive excellence, preparing graduates to serve California's Central Valley and beyond. We seek candidates who are dedicated to teaching, mentoring, and supporting a diverse student population.

Faculty have received both assigned time and funding through Chancellor, Provost, and College Awards. New hires have reduced teaching loads for their first two academic years. After that, faculty members can expect a 12-unit teaching load with opportunities to apply for reassignment or release time.

Faculty initiatives are broad and collaborative with faculty from across the University (CHHS Faculty Research Profiles). Faculty scholarly activities and faculty-led student projects have won numerous awards over the last several years. The department has supported faculty in their efforts to expand its state-of-the-art equipment and lab space (Kines Labs Webpage) to enhance both teaching and research in exercise science.

Qualifications:

 Required Education

  1. Terminal doctoral degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required.
  2. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but the doctoral degree must be completed by (Aug 1, 2027)

Required Experience:

  1. College-level teaching in academic areas directly related to Kinesiology, preferably with an emphasis in clinical exercise physiology and/or cardiovascular physiology and/or functional anatomy.  
  2. Experience in scholarly activities.

Required Teaching Qualification

The successful candidate must also be able to teach in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Clinical exercise physiology and/or cardiovascular physiology
  2. Functional anatomy
  3. General exercise science/exercise physiology courses

*Specific instructional assignments will depend upon Department needs and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Two or more years of full-time teaching at the college or university level in an area directly related to Kinesiology or sports medicine, and the job description.
  2. Teaching experience at the graduate level.
  3. Ability to advise students towards clinical careers such as clinical exercise physiology, physical therapy, athletic training, or other clinical health professions. 
  4. PhD with clinical experience and/or research experience in one of the following areas: 
  1. Clinical exercise physiology with a focus on EKG interpretation.
  2. Cardiovascular physiology 
  3. Functional anatomy
  4. Sports Medicine

     5.     Appropriate professional certifications and/or licenses. Examples include:

  1. Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and/or other appropriate certification or license in the area of clinical exercise physiology.
  2. National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification, Inc.
  3. American Physical Therapy Association
  1. Experience performing research at the R2 level and scholarly activities.
  2. Evidence of seeking and/or acquiring external funding.
  3. Clinical experience, such as physical therapy, athletic training, clinical exercise physiology, or research in cardiovascular physiology.
  4. Post-doctoral work with the ability to obtain external funding.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage a teaching load consisting of 12 units per semester and maintain a research agenda and service requirements.
