Job description

Description
We are seeking a compassionate, creative Volunteer Art Therapist to support hospice patients and their families through therapeutic art activities that promote comfort, self-expression, legacy building, and emotional well-being. This volunteer role is ideal for someone who is passionate about using creativity to bring connection, reflection, and support during the end-of-life journey.
Why Art Therapy in Hospice Care Matters
Art therapy in hospice care is an evidence-based complementary approach that can help address the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of people facing life-limiting illness. Research in palliative care settings has shown meaningful reductions in pain, anxiety, and depression, along with improved well-being and quality of life following art therapy sessions. No prior artistic talent or experience is required, because the value comes from the opportunity for expression, reflection, and connection through the creative process.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate individual art-based activities for hospice patients that promote comfort, reflection, and self-expression.
  • Support legacy projects such as memory books, letters, keepsakes, or other meaningful creative expressions for patients and families.
  • Create a calm, respectful, and supportive environment for patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Adapt activities to meet the physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of each patient.
  • Collaborate with hospice staff to ensure services align with patient care goals and volunteer guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and compliance with organizational policies and hospice volunteer standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in art therapy, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience working with older adults, patients with serious illness, or individuals and families facing grief and loss is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to work with empathy, patience, discretion, and emotional sensitivity.
  • Professional art therapy credentials, supervised clinical training, or volunteer experience in hospice or healthcare settings is highly valued.
Time Commitment
Scheduling can be flexible based on patient needs, family preferences, and hospice program availability. We welcome volunteers who can commit to regular visits, special projects, or supportive creative sessions as needed, following hospice onboarding and training requirements.
