What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam programmer?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

Do Mastercam programmers make good money?

Mastercam programmers typically earn competitive wages, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers who are proficient in CAD/CAM software and have experience with complex machining often command higher pay. Certification and specialization can also positively impact earning potential.

Karman Space & Defense is a leader in the rapid design, development, and production of critical, next-generation system solutions that align with the U.S. Department of War and its allies’ core mission priorities, and meet the accelerating demand for access to space. Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs.

This role is part of our Hypersonics and Strategic Missile Defense business, which designs, develops, and delivers highly dependable missile systems for hypersonic and strategic missile defense missions. We provide integrated, mission-ready hardware that brings together multiple technologies into unified systems engineered to perform in demanding operational environments. Our tip-to-tail capabilities include payload protection and deployment systems, propulsion systems, aerodynamic interstage systems, separation systems, missile subsystems, shroud systems, launch systems, and payload integration solutions.

The CNC Programmer develops, implements, and supports machining processes for advanced precision components by interpreting engineering drawings, designing machining strategies, programming complex toolpaths, and troubleshooting issues directly on the shop floor. This role collaborates closely with machinists, operators, engineering, and quality teams to improve manufacturability, maintain product quality, and enhance overall production capability.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and programs machining processes for complex components using Mastercam.
  • Designs machining strategies and fixtures for three‑, four‑, and five‑axis CNC machines.
  • Owns assigned projects from concept through production release and ongoing support.
  • Troubleshoots machining, tooling, and quality issues directly on the shop floor.
  • Supports and improves legacy part programs and existing production processes.
  • Collaborates with Quality to interpret coordinate measuring machine (CMM) reports, dimensional data, and inspection results.
  • Uses precision measuring tools to validate setups, processes, and corrective actions.
  • Provides manufacturability feedback to engineering teams and customers.
  • Mentors machinists, operators, and other programmers.
  • Assists in standardizing best practices for programming, setups, and documentation.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives related to machining and computer‑aided manufacturing (CAM) workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with understanding of tooling, materials, and machining methods.
  • Five or more years of hands‑on Mastercam programming experience.
  • Solid print reading skills and understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to read and interpret coordinate measuring machine (CMM) reports and verify data using traditional measuring tools.
  • Ability to work directly on the shop floor to diagnose and resolve machining issues.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of file and data management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in a manufacturing‑related field.
  • Ability to read and write G and M code.

A current U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
