Mastercam Programming information

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam programmer?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

Do Mastercam programmers make good money?

Mastercam programmers typically earn competitive wages, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers who are proficient in CAD/CAM software and have experience with complex machining often command higher pay. Certification and specialization can also positively impact earning potential.

Job description

Shape how complex parts come to life

Step into a high-mix, low-volume environment where precision, agility, and creativity intersect. As our 5-Axis CNC Manufacturing Process Engineer, you’ll own process development from CAD/CAM strategy through shop-floor execution—combining world-class Mastercam programming with practical automation to boost throughput and repeatability.

A day in this role
  • Morning: Review new part designs, select tooling/fixturing, and craft optimized 5-axis toolpaths in Mastercam. Validate with simulation and G-code reviews.
  • Midday: Partner with design, production, and automation teams to de-risk manufacturability, troubleshoot setups, and refine programs for cycle time and surface quality.
  • Afternoon: Stand up or tune automation (pallets/robots/probing) to elevate flexibility and throughput. Document workflows and NC strategies for repeat builds.
  • Always: Lead lean/Six Sigma improvements, uphold safety, quality, and environmental standards, and mentor peers on best practices.
What you’ll tackle
  • Optimize processes for complex geometries and materials in a high-mix, low-volume setting.
  • Program and debug 5-axis CNC machines using Mastercam; post, prove-out, and refine G-code.
  • Design and implement automation to increase flexibility and throughput.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve manufacturing challenges quickly and sustainably.
  • Drive continuous improvement using lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Create clear documentation for machining processes, NC programs, and automation workflows.
  • Ensure full compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
What you’ll bring
  • Extensive experience in high-mix, low-volume machining environments.
  • Deep expertise in 5-axis CNC programming and operations.
  • Hands-on success integrating automation into manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM and G-code; Mastercam mastery is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related field (preferred).
What you’ll get
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
  • Opportunities to innovate and lead in a cutting-edge manufacturing environment.
  • A dynamic, collaborative team culture.
  • Continuous learning and professional development.
Benefits
  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
Tools & technologies
  • CAM Software (Mastercam)
  • CNC Lathe (5+ axis)
