Mastercam Programming information

What are some common challenges Mastercam Programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

Job description

Manufacturing Engineer - CNC Programmer

At ReLogic Research, you won't be just another headcount. We're a tight-knit team of engineers, physicists, and technical professionals solving complex challenges in national defense - and we're looking for people who take pride in getting the details right.

As an AS9100D-certified small business supporting the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Missile Defense Agency, we move fast, trust our people, and give team members real ownership of their work. Unlike larger organizations, you'll work directly with our Senior Manufacturing Engineer, machinists, and technical staff to learn the full process - from CAM programming through production support.

This is not a pure operator role. The right candidate wants to understand how parts are made, not just run them - and is eager to develop their programming and process planning skills in a high-mix aerospace manufacturing environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop CNC programs for machined aerospace components under the guidance of the Senior Manufacturing Engineer
  • Learn and apply process planning fundamentals including sequence of operations, setup strategy, and tooling selection
  • Support setup sheet and routing documentation development
  • Assist in proving out jobs on the shop floor alongside machinists
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce setup times and improve repeatability
  • Assist in troubleshooting machining issues and production bottlenecks
  • Develop and maintain process documentation and best practices under senior guidance
  • Work closely with machinists, quality, and engineering teams to support production readiness

Required Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of experience in CNC machining, manufacturing engineering, or related technical field - or equivalent education and experience
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining principles including feeds, speeds, and tooling
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering prints and GD&T
  • Eagerness to learn CAM programming and process planning in a production environment
  • Strong attention to detail and mechanical aptitude
  • Active Secret security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain a clearance
  • Must be a U.S. citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field - or equivalent professional experience
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machining as an operator or programmer
  • Exposure to CAM software (Mastercam, NX, Fusion, HyperMill, Esprit, or similar)
  • Familiarity with multi-axis CNC machining (3/4/5-axis)
  • Experience with Mazak or similar CNC equipment
  • Familiarity with high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with AS9100D or aerospace manufacturing standards

What Success Looks Like

  • Developing proficiency in CAM programming and setup planning under senior guidance
  • Building understanding of how design intent translates to machining strategy
  • Contributing to documented, repeatable processes on the shop floor
  • Growing into an independent programmer capable of owning jobs end to end

This is a full-time salaried position with highly competitive compensation based on experience and skills, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for career growth. Approximately 10% travel is expected.
