Mastercam Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam Programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

Job description

Overview

We are hiring elite-level CNC Machinists to join our high-mix, low-volume aerospace and defense machine shop. We line our floor with cutting-edge, high-precision equipment like DMG Moris so you can machine mission-critical, tight-tolerance components for satellites, fighter jets, helicopters, and beyond.

Our machinists own their work end-to-end, from setup through final inspection, and play a direct role in quality, delivery performance, and continuous improvement.

We're hiring on every shift, and we offer consistent overtime to those who want it, but rarely require it for those who don't.

If you're a top-tier machinist looking to do the best work of your life, please reach out. We are willing to pay for top talent. If you think you're out of our posted range, we still want to chat. For the right skills, we can make it work.

Compensation

  • Machinist $32 - 40 / hr
  • Senior Machinist: $40 - $55 / hr
  • Night Shift Differential: $3 /hr
  • Weekend Shift Differential: $4 / hr

Shifts

  • Day Shift (4 x 10s) 6:00am - 4:30pm
  • Night Shift: (4x 10s) 4:30pm - 3:00am
  • Weekend Shift: (3 x 12s, paid for 40), Friday - Sunday, 6:00am - 6:30pm

Consistent Overtime

  • 10+ hours / week for those who want it
  • Rarely required for those who don't

Relocation

  • Generous package available as needed

Responsibilities

  • Complete Autonomy: Setup, run, inspect, and document results across our floor, heavily utilizing advanced 5-axis machines and mill-turn centers.
  • Manual Fundamentals: You don't just rely on the machine; you understand exactly what the cutter is doing. You leverage deep manual machining fundamentals to troubleshoot chatter, read chip formation, optimize tool pressure, and tackle the most complex setups.
  • Strategy & Execution: Select tooling, establish offsets, build bulletproof workholding strategies, and optimize processes.
  • Quality Control: Hold tight tolerances from the first piece through the final run using manual micrometers, indicators, and precision gauges.
  • Programming Mastery: Read, understand, and efficiently edit G-code and M-code on the floor to restore quality and maximize throughput.
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshoot dimensional, tooling, and machine variables on the fly to achieve first-article success on both proven and unproven parts
  • Advanced Quality (preferred): The ability to program/operate CMMs and independently conduct formal First Article Inspections (FAI) is highly preferred).
  • Advanced Programmer (preferred): Experience fully programming from scratch in Mastercam is a plus but not required

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Experience: 7+ years in precision, tight-tolerance machining (more is always welcome).
  • Aerospace: Strong tenure in Aerospace manufacturing and machining environments
  • Quality Standards: Experience in ISO 9001 or AS9100 shops
  • Precision: Proven ability to hold .0005" (5 tenths / ~13 microns) or tighter on critical features, and the manual skills to verify it.
  • Technical Fluency: Deep understanding of complex blueprints and advanced GD&T (true position, parallelism, profile, concentricity, flatness, coaxiality).
  • Equipment Mastery: Extensive experience setting up multi-axis equipment (5-axis mills, mill-turns, and/or multi-axis lathes).
  • High-Setup Environment: Comfortable in shops where setup time is 30%+ of the job, frequently handling complex setups with 10+ tools.

If you are slightly out of the pay range but believe your skills justify it, apply anyway. For the right talent, we make it work.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision
  • 401(k) with match
  • PTO
