What is a master plumber?

Master Plumbers are highly skilled tradespeople who have achieved the highest level of certification in plumbing. They are licensed to install, repair, and maintain all types of plumbing systems, including water, gas, and drainage lines. Master Plumbers often supervise other plumbers, oversee large projects, and ensure that all work complies with building codes and regulations. To become a Master Plumber, individuals typically must complete years of apprenticeship, pass rigorous exams, and have extensive on-the-job experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a master plumber, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Master Plumber, you need advanced knowledge of plumbing systems, strong troubleshooting abilities, and a state-issued master plumber license, usually obtained after years of experience and passing rigorous exams. Familiarity with plumbing codes, blueprint reading, and experience using specialized tools like pipe cutters, augers, and leak detection equipment are essential. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in managing teams and interacting with clients. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, high-quality work, compliance with regulations, and effective project management in residential and commercial environments.

What are some common challenges master plumbers face when leading a team on large construction projects?

Master Plumbers often oversee complex installations and manage teams of apprentices and journeymen on construction projects. A common challenge is coordinating schedules and ensuring that all plumbing work aligns with other trades to avoid delays. Additionally, Master Plumbers must troubleshoot unforeseen issues such as outdated blueprints or supply chain disruptions, requiring strong problem-solving and leadership skills. Clear communication with both team members and site supervisors is essential for maintaining safety and meeting project deadlines.

What is the difference between Master Plumber vs Journeyman Plumber?

• Assist with plumbing permit applications, documentation, inspections, and municipality requirements.
• Review bathroom remodeling projects for plumbing feasibility and code compliance.
• Provide technical direction involving water supply lines, drains, valves, shower systems, tubs, and plumbing fixtures.
• Train and mentor installers on proper plumbing procedures and company standards.
• Help develop and maintain plumbing-related installation procedures and training materials.
• Troubleshoot complex plumbing conditions discovered during demolition or installation.
• Assist with field inspections, service situations, and project-quality reviews when needed.
• Communicate professionally with homeowners, inspectors, installers, and company leadership.

• Extensive residential plumbing experience.
• Strong knowledge of Michigan plumbing codes and local inspection requirements.
• Experience with bathroom remodeling, showers, bathtubs, valves, drains, supply lines, and fixture installation.
• Ability to identify potential plumbing issues before they become costly project problems.
• Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to teach and guide installers with professionalism and patience.
• Organized, dependable, and comfortable working with municipal permitting departments.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to travel throughout our service area as needed.
• Commitment to high-quality workmanship and an excellent customer experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience serving as a qualifying or designated Master Plumber for a residential construction or remodeling company.
• Previous experience working with permit applications and municipal inspections.
• Experience training plumbers, apprentices, technicians, or remodeling installers.
• Familiarity with bath and shower systems, walk-in showers, tub-to-shower conversions, and aging-in-place bathroom products.
• Experience developing installation standards or quality-control procedures.

This position offers the opportunity to become an important part of our operational leadership team. Your experience will directly influence installer development, project quality, permitting efficiency, code compliance, and customer satisfaction.
We offer:
• Competitive compensation based on experience and level of involvement.
• Consistent, year-round residential remodeling work.
• A leadership-focused role with less emphasis on daily production plumbing.
• The opportunity to build and improve plumbing standards across a growing organization.
• Support from an established production, installation, service, and office team.
• Company-provided technology and administrative support as applicable.
• Paid time off and additional benefits based on the final employment package.
