Master Plumbers often supervise other plumbers, oversee large projects, and ensure that all work complies with building codes and regulations. To become a Master Plumber, individuals typically must complete years of apprenticeship, pass rigorous exams, and have extensive on-the-job experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a master plumber, and why are they important?

Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in managing teams and interacting with clients. Job description

Master Plumber / Plumbing Lead

H&M Mechanical – Lafayette, Colorado

H&M Mechanical is looking for an experienced Master Plumber to help lead and grow our plumbing division.

This is a hands-on position for someone who can perform plumbing service and installation work, diagnose problems, ensure work meets code, support other plumbing employees, and help maintain high standards for quality and customer service.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, can operate independently in the field, and is comfortable serving as a technical resource for both employees and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform residential and light commercial plumbing service, repair, replacement, and installation work
  • Diagnose plumbing problems and recommend appropriate repair or replacement options
  • Install and service water heaters, tankless water heaters, fixtures, faucets, toilets, piping, valves, pumps, pressure-reducing valves, expansion tanks, and other plumbing equipment
  • Perform plumbing work for remodels, equipment replacements, and new installations
  • Review plumbing systems and identify code, safety, or installation concerns
  • Ensure all plumbing work complies with applicable plumbing codes, manufacturer requirements, and company standards
  • Pull or assist with plumbing permits and coordinate required inspections
  • Communicate with inspectors, general contractors, property managers, customers, and other trades as needed
  • Provide technical guidance and support to plumbing technicians, apprentices, and helpers
  • Help train less-experienced employees in proper plumbing practices and troubleshooting
  • Assist management with estimating plumbing repairs, replacements, and projects
  • Determine required materials, equipment, labor, and expected job duration
  • Review jobs before work begins to help prevent scheduling, material, or scope issues
  • Help maintain organized plumbing inventory, tools, and materials
  • Complete accurate job notes, invoices, material records, and documentation
  • Communicate job progress, additional work, delays, and customer concerns to the office
  • Maintain a clean and professional company vehicle and work area
  • Follow company safety policies and safe work practices
  • Participate in the plumbing on-call or emergency schedule when required
  • Help establish and improve plumbing procedures as the department continues to grow

Qualifications

  • Current Colorado Master Plumber license required
  • Strong knowledge of residential and light commercial plumbing systems
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities
  • Knowledge of Colorado plumbing codes and permitting requirements
  • Experience with plumbing service and repair
  • Experience with water heaters and tankless water heaters
  • Ability to read plans, specifications, and manufacturer instructions
  • Ability to estimate labor and material requirements
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to safely operate a company vehicle
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality
  • Professional appearance and attitude

What We're Looking For

The right person will be willing to work in the field, troubleshoot difficult problems, complete service and installation work, support other employees, and help H&M Mechanical continue developing its plumbing department.

We want someone who cares about doing the job correctly, communicating clearly with customers, and leaving behind safe, professional work.
