Scope of Job
The Department of Medical Education at the UTRGV School Of Medicine (UTRGV SOM) in Edinburg, TX seeks a highly qualified faculty member to lead and teach Health System Science primarily within the pre-clerkship curricular years of the MD program. The candidate will develop and manage the module during the pre-clerkship curriculum. This is a wonderful opportunity for an outstanding academic Health System Scientist who is enthusiastic about teaching and education, to contribute to a young medical school with an extremely dynamic environment.
Candidates should have a desire and flexibility to integrate instruction across other disciplines within a fully integrated curriculum. All candidates with an enthusiasm for teaching and those with prior teaching experience in a health profession related environment are encouraged to apply; however, prior teaching experience in an LCME-accredited medical school would be considered preferred. This position will be responsible for teaching, developing, and implementing Health System Science in medical school curriculum which encompasses key areas related to healthcare, systems thinking, epidemiology, quality improvement in healthcare, patient safety, social determinants of health, population health, global health, statistics and health policy. This position has a full-time instructional mandate, and the recruited candidate must be committed to excellence in the teaching and mentoring of first- and second-year medical students, in addition to teaching within other graduate programs offered by the School of Medicine. The present MD curriculum at the school is of a hybrid nature, designed around the Problem Based Learning (PBL) modality, while also employing traditional lecture-based instruction.
Minimum Qualifications
Terminal doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD, Doctor of Public Health, or equivalent) with specific training/experience in health systems science or a closely related field.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
