Manager of Health Research


Location:#200 - 12308 111 Avenue, Edmonton

Position Status:1 Full-time (40 hours/week), 16-month contract


The Otipemisiwak Metis Government is looking to place a full-time, temporary Manager of Health Research to join the Health Department. Reporting to the Associate Director of Health, the Manager of Health Research is primarily responsible for implementing research initiatives to better understand the health experiences and needs of Metis Albertans. This role oversees a team of Research and Project Coordinators (RPCs) that work to coordinate comprehensive research projects in partnership with academic, system, government, and community partners. The Manager of Health Research must have experience in health research, possess strong project management, communication, and writing skills, be motivated and driven, and have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with multiple stakeholders while demonstrating a passion for Metis wellness and culture.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and provide direction to a team of Research and Project Coordinators (RPCs), ensuring that project deliverables are maintained on projected timelines.
  • Perform supervisory duties, including hiring and training staff, building staff capacity, assigning job duties, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Health and/or Director of Health to develop research proposals and identify funding opportunities.
  • Ensure research agreements and protocols align with the six principles of ethical Metis research and support self-determination of the Otipemisiwak Metis Government in the research process.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of annual project workplans, including project spending and forecasting within a designated budget.
  • Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data on Metis health, in collaboration with the Associate Director of Health and/or Director of Health.
  • Support the creation and submission of abstracts, posters, and presentations for national and international conferences.
  • Support knowledge mobilization for different audiences, including community, academic, and system partners.
  • Foster and maintain meaningful and collaborative relationships with academic, community, and system partners.
  • Develop relationships with the Metis community with the intent of informing existing and future Otipemisiwak Metis Government health initiatives.
  • Represent the Otipemisiwak Metis Government at conferences, in-service trainings, and meetings.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

  • Strong leadership skills with a recognized strength in leading and engaging teams and creating a culture that promotes the development of individual and organizational capacity.
  • Knowledge of Metis history, culture, and issues affecting Metis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Metis Government and Metis culture is an asset.
  • Ability to produce professional documents, reports, and presentations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to be flexible and allocate time and resources effectively.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in health, social sciences, or related field with a research and/or community engagement focus; master's degree is an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in a management role; project management training or certification is an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience leading a team.
  • Experience in serving Metis Albertans is an asset.


Other Requirements

  • Position is based in Edmonton; in-office presence is required.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
  • Some travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional less frequent out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Acceptable attainment and annual maintenance of a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
